Lore

Biology

Aipom is a purple monkey with a beige face, belly and feet, a big head with round ears, and a cheeky smile. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 11.5 kg. Its tail ends in a three-fingered hand strong enough to hold its whole body up from a branch yet delicate enough to handle small objects. Bulbapedia says the cowlick on its head is longer on females.

Behaviour

Aipom lives high in the treetops and swings from branch to branch, using its tail for balance. The Pokédex says it wraps the tail round a branch to sleep so it does not fall.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is forest, and Bulbapedia says treetops of tropical, temperate and even boreal forests. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Kitakami in The Teal Mask, in the wild in Violet only; Scarlet players trade for it.

Diet

The Pokédex says it uses its tail to pluck fruit that is out of reach, and in Alola its favourite food is Bounsweet.

Powers

Aipom can have Run Away or Pickup, with Skill Link hidden, an Ability that makes multi-hit moves such as Fury Swipes always strike the maximum number of times. It also learns Fling, Nasty Plot and Baton Pass. With base Speed 85 and Attack 70 it is a quick, light hitter.

Name origin

Aipom may combine 'ape' and 'palm'. The Japanese name is Eipam (エイパム), which Bulbapedia reads the same way.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Aipom as a New World monkey with an exaggerated prehensile tail, possibly a capuchin. It may also vaguely echo the ahuizotl, an Aztec creature said to have monkey hands and an extra human hand at the tip of its tail. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Aipom evolves into Ambipom when it levels up while knowing Double Hit, which it learns at level 32 in Scarlet and Violet. Before Generation IV it had no evolution.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus, Aipom lives in several areas, including Aipom Hill in the Cobalt Coastlands, and the species first appeared in Gold and Silver. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ash's Aipom stole his hat in 'Slaking Kong!' and was caught in 'Channeling the Battle Zone!'. In 'Throwing the Track Switch', Ash swapped her to Dawn in exchange for Buizel, as she loved Pokémon Contests.

Fun facts

  • The Legends: Arceus Pokédex says ancient writings describe Aipom as a one-armed oddity.
  • At Spaceworld '97, Aipom appears to have been called Teiru, a name derived from 'tail'.
  • In the anime, Clemont's Aipom Arm gadget copies the shape of Aipom's tail.
