Lore
Biology
Drowzee is a bipedal, tapir-like Pokémon, 1 m tall and 32.4 kg, with a short trunk, tired-looking eyes and triangular ears. Its upper body is yellow and its lower half brown, split by a wavy line. The Pokédex says it reads dreams by sniffing with its big nose, and that it is thought to be related to Munna and Musharna.
Behaviour
Drowzee puts its enemies to sleep before eating their dreams. If it makes friends with someone, it may show them the tastiest dream it has ever eaten. Several entries add that an itchy nose while you sleep is a sure sign one is standing over your pillow, eating your dream through your nostrils.
Habitat
The game data lists it as a grassland Pokémon; Bulbapedia adds savannas. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's South Province and appears in 1-star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Diet
Dreams, mostly children's, which the Pokédex says taste better than adults'. Bad dreams taste sour, and eating only those can make it ill.
Powers
Its Abilities are Insomnia, which keeps it from falling asleep itself, Forewarn, and the hidden Inner Focus. Hypnosis puts foes to sleep, backed by Psychic, Zen Headbutt, Future Sight and Calm Mind. With 90 base Special Defense it is built to soak up special hits.
Name origin
Drowzee may combine 'drowsy' with 'zzz', the sound of snoring. Its Japanese name is Sleepe (スリープ), which may come from 'sleep'.
Design inspiration
Drowzee may be based on the baku, a Japanese spirit that eats bad dreams. Baku began as composite animals and later became tapir-like, and Drowzee's two-tone colouring is especially close to the Malayan tapir. The FireRed Pokédex itself calls it a descendant of the baku.
Evolution notes
Drowzee evolves into Hypno at level 26.
In the games
Drowzee's best-known game role is a Treasure Town resident in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness who takes Azurill hostage until the player's team has him arrested. In Pokémon Ranger, a man called the Drowsy Guy stands at Fiore Temple with two Drowzee after the credits. It is a Generation I original.
In the anime
Drowzee debuted alongside Hypno in 'Hypno's Naptime', where a club uses the pair to help its members sleep. In 'Healing the Healer!', Goh catches a Drowzee and uses it to help defend Suicune.
