Lore

Biology

Hypno is a slightly humanoid, yellow-skinned Pokémon, 1.6 m tall and 75.6 kg. It has triangular ears, sleepy eyes, a large nose and a white ruff of neck fur that is longer on females. In its left hand it holds a silver, ring-like pendulum, and it is never seen without it. The Pokédex says the longer it swings the pendulum, the longer its hypnosis lasts.

Behaviour

Hypno keeps away from people on quiet roads, polishing its pendulum while it waits for prey. The Pokédex says it puts everyone it meets to sleep for a taste of their dreams and carries off anyone having a good one; the FireRed entry records a case of it taking away a child. Some Hypno help doctors treat patients who cannot sleep. In the anime, a damaged pendulum leaves it despondent.

Habitat

The game data lists it as a grassland Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is spread across Paldea's South, West and North Provinces and the Dalizapa Passage, with 4-star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

Dreams. In Alola, the Pokédex says, its main target is Komala.

Powers

Like Drowzee it has Insomnia, Forewarn and the hidden Inner Focus. Hypnosis puts foes to sleep, backed by Psychic, Future Sight, Zen Headbutt, Foul Play and Thunder Punch. With 115 base Special Defense and 85 HP it is a sturdy special wall rather than a fast hitter.

Name origin

Hypno may come from 'hypnosis'. Its Japanese name is Sleeper (スリーパー), which is simply the English word.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Hypno may be modelled on a hypnotist and also resembles a proboscis monkey. Its habits echo fairies, goblins and bogeymen from European folklore. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Hypno evolves from Drowzee at level 26 and is the last stage of its line.

In the games

Hypno first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), where the only wild ones are in Cerulean Cave and every other Hypno is an evolved Drowzee. It also lurks in the Dusk Factory in Pokémon Ranger.

In the anime

Hypno debuted alongside Drowzee in 'Hypno's Naptime'. Harrison's Hypno beat Ash's Totodile at the Silver Conference in 'Playing with Fire!', and in 'Mission: Total Recall!' Faba's Hypno tries to wipe Lillie's memories until Gladion's Silvally stops it.

Fun facts

  • In the music video for 'Celestial', a Hypno emerges from Ed Sheeran's Game Boy Color and sends him straight to sleep.
  • Hypno was among the first four Pokémon designs shown to launch the Pokémon 151 brand.
  • Bulbapedia notes that because Hypno always holds its pendulum in its left hand, it is most likely left-handed.
