Emolga is the Sky Squirrel Pokémon, a flying-squirrel Electric and Flying type that scatters electricity as it glides, so bird Pokémon steer clear and leave it all the food. It looks sweet, but the Pokédex warns that it is a handful.

Lore

Biology

Emolga is a white flying squirrel, 0.4 m tall and 5 kg, with black eyes and a tiny nose. Yellow electric sacs sit on its cheeks. It has rounded black ears, a black hood-like patch around its head and yellow wing-like flaps on its three-fingered arms. The Pokédex says electricity made in its cheek pouches is kept in the membrane and let out as it glides.

Behaviour

Emolga glides from tree to tree, and the Ultra Sun entry says that on thundery nights their numbers can nearly hide the sky.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in treetops and usually nests in holes that Pikipek gouge in trees. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zone 14 and several Lumiose City districts, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's 3 star Electric and Flying zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

Diet

The Moon entry has it shocking berries and Bug Pokémon until they are cooked before eating them. The Shield entry says it loves sweet berries and sometimes stuffs its cheeks too full to fly properly.

Powers

Emolga has the Ability Static, with Motor Drive hidden. In Sword and Shield it starts with Nuzzle, then learns Thunder Shock, Spark, Volt Switch and Discharge, plus Acrobatics for its gliding. With 103 base Speed and 75 in both Attack and Special Attack, it is a fast hit-and-run attacker.

Name origin

Emolga may combine 衣紋 emon (drapery) with モモンガ momonga, the Japanese word for a flying squirrel. The Japanese name is the same, Emolga (エモンガ).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia, citing Nintendo Dream, says Emolga was made to echo Pikachu, since each generation has traditionally added at least one Electric-type rodent. Its model is a flying squirrel, with the gliding membrane drawn as a cape, and it may specifically be the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel.

In the games

Nimbasa City Gym Leader Elesa uses two Emolga in Black and White and swaps them with Volt Switch. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, an Emolga is an important character who is good friends with Dunsparce. The species debuted in Black and White.

In the anime

Iris's Emolga debuted in 'Emolga the Irresistible!', where Iris caught her; she is manipulative, lazy and gluttonous, but also good-hearted. In 'Dazzling the Nimbasa Gym!', Elesa's Emolga beat Ash's Palpitoad and Snivy, and Pikachu then defeated it.
