Lore

Biology

Sawsbuck is a cream-and-brown deer, 1.9 m tall and 92.5 kg, with rhomboid ears and light orange markings curving down from its eyes. A Scarlet entry adds that one with many flowers on its antlers seems to grow slowly, because the flowers absorb its nutrients.

Behaviour

Sawsbuck migrates with the seasons and lives in herds led by the one with the most magnificent antlers. Autumn Form males are short-tempered and fight each other incessantly, while the Winter Form is said to be calm and easy to tame.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it can live almost anywhere but prefers to stay away from people. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South, West and North Provinces, while the Summer Form comes only from evolving Deerling, and in the Indigo Disk's Terarium.

Powers

Sawsbuck has the Abilities Chlorophyll and Sap Sipper, with Serene Grace hidden. It learns Horn Leech the moment it evolves, plus Megahorn; Horn Leech was its signature move in Generation V. Its four seasonal forms differ in antler decoration: pink flowers, green leaves, red and brown foliage, or a white coating. With 100 base Attack and 95 Speed it is a quick physical attacker.

Name origin

Sawsbuck may be a pun on 'sawbuck', a frame for holding wood to be cut, which hides the word 'buck' (a male deer). SAWS could also spell out the seasons: summer, autumn, winter, spring. The Japanese name is Mebukijika (メブキジカ), which may join 芽吹き mebuki (to bud) with 鹿 shika (deer).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Sawsbuck may be based on Père David's deer, which decorates its antlers with foliage in the breeding season. It also suggests the Four Stags of Yggdrasil from Norse mythology. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Sawsbuck evolves from Deerling at level 34.

In the games

Sawsbuck is a 4 star Tera Raid Battle Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, and it debuted in Black and White. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Burgundy's Spring Form Sawsbuck first appeared in 'A Connoisseur's Revenge!', where a Solar Beam from Cilan's Pansage beat it. All four forms feature in 'The Four Seasons of Sawsbuck!', where a secret lake lets them take every form at once.

Fun facts

  • According to Bulbapedia, Sawsbuck's design was complete before seasons were worked into Black and White.
  • In Generations VI to VIII every wild Sawsbuck was a Spring Form; the other three forms arrived only by transfer or from Pokémon GO.
  • In the Unova horoscope, Sawsbuck stands for January.
  • Bulbapedia places the Pokédex's black-tea fact under the Summer Form: its leaves make a black tea, and Paldea's is especially aromatic.
