Lore
Biology
Floatzel is 1.1 m tall and weighs 33.5 kg, an orange, otter-like weasel with arms longer than its legs and two tails that spin like propellers. Its yellow flotation sac forms a ring behind its head and over its back, and the Pokédex says it developed from chasing aquatic prey.
Behaviour
Floatzel is a hunter as well as a rescuer: one Pokédex entry says it carries off prey, and another says the sac doubles as a rubber raft. It lets the air out of the sac to dive, and the Legends: Arceus entry says the sac keeps it from drowning even in stormy seas.
Habitat
The Pokédex places it around fishing ports and hamlets. In Scarlet and Violet it swims in Paldea's four seas, turns up in parts of the West Province and on Glaseado Mountain, and appears in 4 star Tera Raid Battles.
Powers
Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain, and hidden Water Veil prevents burns. It learns Aqua Jet at level 24 and Wave Crash at 62, and knows Crunch and Ice Fang from the start. Base Attack 105 and Speed 115 make it a fast, hard-hitting physical attacker.
Name origin
Floatzel may combine 'float' and 'weasel', and perhaps 'flotsam' too. The Japanese name is Floazel (フローゼル), also from 'float' and 'weasel'.
Design inspiration
Floatzel appears to be a weasel crossed with a sea otter and fitted with flotation gear such as armbands, a life vest and a raft. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Floatzel evolves from Buizel at level 26, with no other condition.
In the games
Floatzel is the last Pokémon of Pastoria City Gym Leader Crasher Wake in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, and his signature Pokémon at the Pokémon World Tournament in Black 2 and White 2. It first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, and it cannot be obtained in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Floatzel debuted in 'Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! (Part 1)', where the Ranger Kellyn captures it with his Styler to flee from Sharpedo. Crasher Wake's Floatzel lost to Ash's Buizel in 'A Crasher Course in Power!'.

- In 'Showdown at the Gates of Warp!', a Trainer's Floatzel turned back into a Buizel under Dialga's influence.
- Its German name, Bojelin, combines Boje ('buoy') and Hermelin ('ermine').
