Lore

Biology

Gimmighoul is a small blue-grey metal creature with gold coin-like eyes. In its Chest Form it is 0.3 m tall and weighs 5 kg and lives in a red chest whose buckle looks like the number 1,000 from the side; the Scarlet Pokédex says it was born in a chest about 1,500 years ago. The Roaming Form has no chest, only an old coin on its back, and stands 0.1 m tall at 1 kg.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia says Chest Form Gimmighoul ambushes people from warehouses and shop corners, using ghost energy to make them collect coins for its chest. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex says the chest is so heavy that it struggles to move. A Roaming Form about to be found turns invisible, leaving only its coin.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says the Chest Form turns up in old Paldean structures like watchtowers and ruined forts. In Scarlet and Violet it is found all over Paldea.

Diet

The Violet Pokédex says the Roaming Form survives by draining the life-force of people who try to take its coin.

Powers

Its Ability Rattled raises Speed when it is hit by a Dark, Ghost or Bug move, while the Roaming Form has Run Away. It knows only Tackle and Astonish by levelling. With 70 Defense and a base stat total of only 300 it is sturdy but extremely slow.

Name origin

Gimmighoul may blend gimme, gimmick, mimic and ghoul, and together it sounds like 'give me gold'. The Japanese name is Collecurei (コレクレー), possibly collect plus rei ('spirit') and a pun on 'give me this'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia links Gimmighoul to the ghoul of Arabic folklore, with antennae and a tail like dowsing rods for finding buried treasure, and its Chest Form to the RPG mimic that disguises itself as a chest. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

It evolves into Gholdengo when levelled up while the player holds 999 Gimmighoul Coins, which are used up.

In the games

Gimmighoul's Chest Form can be fought and caught across Paldea in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted; the Roaming Form flees, leaving coins, and can be caught in Pokémon GO. In Legends: Z-A the Chest Form turns up in the wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Gimmighoul debuted in 'The Terapagos I Don't Know', making Roy collect coins for its chest, and Dot caught it in 'Riding the Waves'.
