Lore
Biology
Girafarig is a yellow quadruped, 1.5 m (4'11") tall and 41.5 kg (91.5 lbs), with a long neck, two knobbed horns and a pink nose. Its coat is split in two: the front is yellow with brown spots and the rear is brown with yellow ones, and females have less of the brown. Pink spikes run down its back, and its tail ends in a toothy head with yellow eyes.
Behaviour
The front head leads while the tail head reacts on instinct. The Pokédex says the tail can snap at an alluring smell or at a foe creeping up from behind, and Girafarig can even fight while facing away. Bulbapedia says the tail copies the main head's chewing at mealtimes.
Habitat
Bulbapedia places it on savannas and grasslands. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the West Province and Area Zero.
Diet
The Pokédex says it eats grass and tree shoots.
Powers
Its Abilities are Inner Focus and Early Bird, with Sap Sipper hidden. The Scarlet Pokédex says the tiny brain in its tail still gives off powerful psychic energy. With base Special Attack 90 and Speed 85 it is a quick special attacker.
Name origin
Girafarig may come from 'giraffe', and Bulbapedia says its name is one of five English Pokémon names that read the same backwards, perhaps nodding to its two heads. The Japanese name is Kirinriki (キリンリキ), perhaps from kirin (giraffe) and nenriki (telekinesis).
Design inspiration
Girafarig appears to be based on a giraffe, possibly a calf given its short neck, with a back half that may borrow from the okapi. Its tail head may echo the mythical Chimera, and its sharp colour split could represent genetic chimerism. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
It evolves into Farigiraf when levelled up while knowing Twin Beam, which it learns at level 32. Before Generation IX it had no evolution at all.
In the games
In Scarlet and Violet, Girafarig appears in 3-star Tera Raid Battles and The Indigo Disk's Savanna Biome, and it first appeared in Gold and Silver. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Cherry's Girafarig made its series debut in 'The Psychic Sidekicks!', where its bond with her let it predict the attacks of Team Rocket's Giant Gengar.
Fun facts
- Jeff Kalles, who helped name many Generation II Pokémon, came up with its English name.
- In the Spaceworld '97 demo it looked more symmetrical, like a two-headed Pushmi-pullyu, and Bulbapedia says it was first planned as a Dark and Normal type.
- The same demo seems to have included a pre-evolution called Tsuinzu (ツインズ), meaning 'twins'.
