Golett is a Ground/Ghost-type Pokémon, the Automaton Pokémon, number 622 (#0622) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the Unova region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 92 kg.

Golett is the Automaton Pokémon, a lumpy clay figure built for ancient people that is still following their orders thousands of years later. Nobody can identify the energy that moves it, and the Pokédex suggests it may soon run out.

Lore

Biology

Golett is 1 m tall and 92 kg, made of rough teal and blue clay. It has rectangular eyes, a short crest on its head and two brown straps crossing its chest, and its eyes, its chest swirl and the gaps near its limbs glow pale yellow. The Pokédex says ancient science fashioned it from clay.

Behaviour

Golett is a worker built to obey. The Pokédex says its master gave it orders thousands of years back, and it is still carrying them out. Nobody knows why, but some Golett keep lining boulders up in rows.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no natural habitat, only that ancient people made it. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in The Indigo Disk's Canyon and Polar Biomes.

Powers

Its Abilities are Iron Fist, which strengthens punching moves, and Klutz, which stops it using held items; the Hidden Ability is No Guard, which makes every move involving it hit. It learns Shadow Punch, Curse, Shadow Ball and Mega Punch, and its base Attack is 74.

Name origin

Golett may combine 'golem' with the small-thing suffix '-let'. The Japanese name is Gobit (ゴビット), which may mix 'golem' and 'bit' (small) or kobito (小人), meaning 'small person'.

Design inspiration

James Turner designed Golett and Golurk. They draw on golems, the clay servants of Jewish folklore, and Bulbapedia says Golett may also recall haniwa, Japanese clay funeral figures. It adds that Unova, based on the New York area, may nod to New York City's large Jewish community. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Golett evolves into Golurk at level 43.

In the games

Golett can be found in Dragonspiral Tower in Black and White, its first game. Scarlet and Violet's base games only give it by transfer or trade, and in Legends: Z-A it is found in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Luke's Golett debuted in 'Movie Time! Zorua in "The Legend of the Pokémon Knight"!', helping its Trainer make films by building props and carrying equipment. It later fought Iris's Axew in the Club Battle semifinals in 'Club Battle Finale: A Hero's Outcome!'.

Fun facts

  • Wild Golett hold Light Clay 5% of the time, an item that lengthens screen moves, yet Golett cannot learn Aurora Veil or Light Screen, and Reflect only reached it from Generation IX onwards.
  • In Scarlet and Violet's data a Golett learns Earthquake at level 52 and Dynamic Punch at level 56, long after the level 43 at which it normally evolves; Golurk learns them later still, at 58 and 64.
  • Bulbapedia floats a second inspiration for Golett: a cannonball, since it can curl its limbs into a round shape and its evolution turns into a cannon.
