Lore
Biology
Granbull is a stout, lilac, bulldog-like Pokémon, 1.4 m (4'07") tall and 48.7 kg (107.4 lbs). Its big lower jaw carries two long tusk-like fangs, two small fangs sit above, and it has flat curved ears, a small black nose, a black collar and black bands round its wrists. Bulbapedia says it can stand on two legs but often moves on all fours.
Behaviour
Despite its fierce look, Granbull is timid and easily spooked, and the Pokédex says it flails its limbs to fend off an attacker. The Ultra Moon Pokédex says it is too sensitive to be a watchdog. Young people are charmed by how different its attitude is from its looks.
Habitat
Bulbapedia places it in urban areas. In Scarlet and Violet it is not found in the wild in the base game; in The Indigo Disk it lives in the Polar Biome.
Powers
Its Abilities are Intimidate and Quick Feet, with Rattled hidden. The Pokédex says its Bite is powerful, and it learns Play Rough at level 43 and Crunch at level 59. Base Attack 120 and HP 90 make it a strong physical attacker, though its Speed is only 45.
Name origin
Granbull may combine 'grand', 'grumble' and 'bulldog' or 'bully'. The Japanese name is Granbulu (グランブル), explained the same way.
Design inspiration
Granbull may be based on bulldogs, which can look fierce but are gentle and have often been used as guard dogs, perhaps explaining its thick collar and shackle-like wristbands. Its size may nod to large bulldog breeds such as the Serrano Bulldog, Ca de Bou and Alano Español. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
It evolves from Snubbull at level 23.
In the games
In Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, a Snubbull in Pokémon Square wanders into the newly found Luminous Cave after the credits and evolves into a Granbull, showing everyone that evolution is possible. Granbull debuted in Gold and Silver, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Madame Muchmoney's Snubbull evolved into a Granbull in 'The Trouble With Snubbull', after running away and following Team Rocket's Meowth around Johto. Alola's Officer Jenny owns a Granbull that stops Viren and his henchmen from escaping in 'The Young Flame Strikes Back!'.
