Lore

Biology

Snubbull is a pink, two-legged, bulldog-style Pokémon, 0.6 m (2'00") tall and 7.8 kg (17.2 lbs), covered in blue polka dots. Loose skin hangs over its lower body like a dress, with a small blue ruff round its neck, black-tipped ears, a shiny black nose and an underbite over powerful jaws. Its arms are short and stumpy.

Behaviour

Snubbull is playful, affectionate and easily spoiled, and bonds quickly with people. Pokédex entries say it bares its fangs to send smaller Pokémon scurrying, yet seems a little sad when they flee, and that other puppy Pokémon sometimes bully it. It tends to sleep half the day.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in urban areas. In Scarlet and Violet it is not found in the wild in the base game; in The Indigo Disk it lives in the Polar Biome.

Powers

Its Abilities are Intimidate and Run Away, with Rattled hidden. It has Bite, Scary Face and Charm, and learns Play Rough at level 37 and Crunch at level 49. Snubbull was a pure Normal type before Generation VI, when it became a Fairy type. Its base Attack of 80 is its best stat.

Name origin

Snubbull may combine 'snub' (a short nose, or to treat with disdain) with 'bulldog' or 'bully', and perhaps 'snuggle'. The Japanese name is Bulu (ブルー), which may come from 'bulldog'.

Design inspiration

Snubbull looks modelled on a bulldog, and its dress-like body may recall pampered pet dogs with dyed fur and clothes. Bulbapedia also suggests the Cù-sìth, a Celtic 'dog fairy', or a kobold, the dog-like sprites of Japanese media. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

It evolves into Granbull at level 23.

In the games

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon give Snubbull a small story moment: the one in Mina's house in Seafolk Village is said to have inspired her to become an artist by excitedly tearing up one of her drawings. Snubbull debuted in Gold and Silver. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Madame Muchmoney's Snubbull first appeared in 'Snubbull Snobbery', where it chased Meowth and tried to bite his tail. In the short 'Pikachu's Vacation' a Snubbull leads a quartet of troublemakers at the Pokémon Theme Park.

Fun facts

  • In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Snubbull swarms on Route 209, the same number as its National Pokédex entry.
  • Early merchandise for Mewtwo Strikes Back, and even the title card of 'Snubbull Snobbery', misspelled its name as 'Snubble'.
  • An early Spaceworld '97 demo design, apparently called Bulu, was a Psychic type.
  • Its 'Fairy Pokémon' category, shared with Granbull, Clefairy and Clefable, existed long before the Fairy type did.
