Paradox Pokémon · Ground/Fighting-type

Great Tusk official artwork

Great Tusk is a Ground/Fighting-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 984 (#0984) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 2.2 m tall and weighs 320 kg.

Great Tusk is a Paradox Pokémon, an armoured, spiky, tusk-swinging brute that an in-game magazine likens to Donphan with gigantic tusks, and the only Pokémon with the Ground and Fighting type combination. The Violet Pokédex says it resembles a mysterious creature that a paranormal magazine claims has existed since ancient times.

Lore

Biology

Great Tusk is a large grey, elephant-like Pokémon. Dark purple plates cover its trunk, back and tail, topped by three rows of pinkish-red spikes, and tufts of pinkish-red fur circle its legs. Its jagged mouth is framed by two huge tusks that curl inwards, and its dark purple ears are long and serrated. It is 2.2 m (7 ft 3 in) tall and weighs 320 kg (705.5 lb). Unlike Donphan it does not usually curl into a ball, which Bulbapedia guesses is because of the tusks.

Behaviour

Great Tusk has a savage nature, and the magazine describes it as aggressive. The Scarlet Pokédex says sightings have occurred in recent years. Bulbapedia notes an unproven theory that it survives from the age of the dinosaurs.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet it is found in Area Zero and, as a giant Titan, in the Asado Desert. Violet players get one by trading with Scarlet.

Powers

Its only Ability is Protosynthesis, which raises its highest stat by 30% (50% if it is Speed) in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy. Attack and Defense are tied at 131, and ties go to Attack. It fights with Headlong Rush, Close Combat, Earthquake and Knock Off, and clears hazards with Rapid Spin. With 115 base HP and matching 131 Attack and Defense it is a bulky, heavy-hitting bruiser.

Name origin

Great Tusk is literally a great tusk. The Japanese name is Idainakiba (イダイナキバ), which can be read as idai na kiba, 'great tusk'.

Design inspiration

Great Tusk is based on Donphan, and Bulbapedia notes that extinct elephant relatives such as mammoths or mastodons may have shaped it too. Its spikes and tail recall dinosaurs, and the mix of mammal and reptile traits could hint at early synapsids, the so-called proto-mammals. Its futuristic counterpart is Iron Treads. These are fan readings.

In the games

In Scarlet, where it debuted, a giant Great Tusk is the Quaking Earth Titan of the Asado Desert, a boss that grew after eating Sour Herba Mystica. Once beaten it can be rematched, and a Great Tusk caught there carries the Titan Mark. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In its debut episode, 'Total-lie Awesome Pokémon in Area Zero?!', Great Tusk took on a wild Scream Tail as well as Coral's Glalie. In the same episode it curls into a ball and rolls with Rollout, which Bulbapedia notes is unusual for it.
