Scream Tail is a Fairy/Psychic-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 985 (#0985) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 8 kg.

Lore

Biology

Scream Tail is a round, pink Pokémon with pointed ears that are black inside, tiny fangs and big yellow eyes with markings like make-up. A long, curling tuft of fur trails down its back like a tail, darker pink at the tip, and a real tail sits underneath. It floats rather than walks. It is 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) tall and weighs 8 kg (17.6 lb).

Behaviour

The in-game magazine, as Bulbapedia summarises it, describes a fierce creature in a Paldean forest that attacks anyone who comes close, a sharp contrast to Jigglypuff's gentle lullabies. The Scarlet Pokédex says just one sighting has ever been reported, and that it resembles a creature shown in an old expedition journal. In the anime it turns out to be a poor singer that ends up screaming.

Habitat

The magazine places it in a forest somewhere in Paldea, Bulbapedia says. In Scarlet it is found in Area Zero, and Violet players get one by trading with Scarlet.

Powers

Its only Ability is Protosynthesis, which raises its highest stat in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy; its highest is Special Defense at 115. Its loud moves include Hyper Voice, Boomburst, Howl and Perish Song, and it also uses Play Rough, Psychic Fangs and Wish. With 115 HP, 115 Special Defense and 111 Speed it is a bulky, quick support Pokémon.

Name origin

Scream Tail is literally a screaming tail. The Japanese name is Sakebushippo (サケブシッポ), from sakebu ('to scream') and shippo ('tail').

Design inspiration

Scream Tail is based on Jigglypuff and seems to be its opposite, loud and unkempt where Jigglypuff is soft. Its wild hair and screeching could nod to a stereotypical caveman or to punk rock. Bulbapedia notes that its ponytail may echo the hollow head crests of hadrosaur dinosaurs, which may have worked as resonating chambers for loud calls. These are fan readings.

In the games

Scream Tail is one of the ancient Paradox Pokémon of Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A. It was also given out through a CoroCoro event from 15 January to 14 March 2024.

In the anime

Coral accidentally caught a Scream Tail in its debut episode, 'Total-lie Awesome Pokémon in Area Zero?!', and nicknamed it Screamypuff. She later Terastallized it into a Fairy type to take on Liko, Roy and Dot in 'The Rising Volt Tacklers vs. The Explorers!'

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia points out that one billion years is far older than complex life is thought to be on Earth: the first multicellular organisms appeared only around 600 million years ago.
  • Its official artwork looks like Jigglypuff's from FireRed and LeafGreen.
  • Bulbapedia says it stands 2.4 times as tall as Jigglypuff and has 300 more base stat points, the biggest jumps between a Paradox Pokémon and its apparent relative.
