Brute Bonnet official artwork

Brute Bonnet is a Grass/Dark-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 986 (#0986) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 21 kg.

Brute Bonnet is a Paradox Pokémon that the Violet Pokédex says only slightly resembles a creature a dubious magazine called a dinosaur-mushroom hybrid. Its caps resemble Poké Balls, which is odd for a creature supposedly from the distant past.

How to pronounce Brute Bonnet

Brute Bonnet is pronounced BROOT BON-it. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Brute Bonnet looks like a mushroom on four stumpy brown legs, with big caps on its head and arms, a jagged pink mouth and a tail. Its head cap is spiked, with what looks like green moss beneath it. It is 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) tall and weighs 21 kg (46.3 lb).

Behaviour

The in-game magazine, as Bulbapedia summarises it, calls Brute Bonnet a bizarre mix of dinosaur and Amoonguss, and says its large size and low intelligence make it a savage fighter. The Scarlet Pokédex says the Brute Bonnet that a certain book lists might really have been this Pokémon.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet it is found in Area Zero, and Violet players get one by trading with Scarlet.

Powers

Its only Ability is Protosynthesis, which raises its highest stat in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy. Its highest stat is Attack at 127, so that is what gets the boost. It hits with Sucker Punch, Thrash and Payback, drains health with Giga Drain, heals with Synthesis, and puts foes to sleep with Spore. It can also redirect attacks with Rage Powder. With 111 base HP and 127 Attack it is a hard-hitting bruiser.

Name origin

Brute Bonnet is literally a brute bonnet. 'Bonnet' can mean a hat, and the common bonnet is also a mushroom species. The Japanese name is Araburutake (アラブルタケ), from araburu ('savage') and take ('mushroom').

Design inspiration

Brute Bonnet is built from Amoonguss and a dinosaur. Bulbapedia suggests it may also draw on Syzygites megalocarpus, a parasitic mould that grows on mushrooms. The idea of a dinosaur-fungus cross may nod to the FIMS hypothesis, which proposes that a fungal bloom after the mass extinction hit dinosaurs harder than mammals. These are fan readings.

In the games

Brute Bonnet is one of the ancient Paradox Pokémon of Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A. It was a featured Tera Raid Battle spotlight alongside Iron Hands from 22 to 24 March 2024.

Fun facts

  • With the Toedscool line, Bulbapedia notes, it continues a pattern of odd-numbered generations adding fungus Pokémon, after Paras, Shroomish, Foongus and Morelull.
  • Its base HP of 111 is the highest of any Grass type in Generation IX.
  • A CoroCoro Brute Bonnet was given out online from 15 January to 14 March 2024.
