Lore

Biology

Flutter Mane is a ghostly, dark blue-green Pokémon with neither arms nor legs visible. Its lower half ends in small ruffled flaps like a dress, red gems circle its neck, and red spikes sit on top of its head. Its big yellow eyes have red sclerae. It is 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) tall and weighs 4 kg (8.8 lb).

Behaviour

The in-game magazine, as Bulbapedia summarises it, says early eyewitnesses described a giant, fierce Misdreavus. Bulbapedia notes that Flutter Mane only spawns at night.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet it is found in Area Zero, and Violet players get one by trading with Scarlet.

Powers

Its only Ability is Protosynthesis, which raises its highest stat in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy. Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed are all tied at 135, and Bulbapedia says ties go to Special Attack. It strikes with Moonblast, Shadow Ball, Mystical Fire and Dazzling Gleam, and it can use Phantom Force, Perish Song and Memento. With only 55 base HP, Attack and Defense, it is a very fast glass cannon.

Name origin

Flutter Mane is literally a fluttering mane. The Japanese name is Habatakukami (ハバタクカミ), from habataku ('to flutter') and kami (髪, 'hair').

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Hitoshi Ariga with the design. Flutter Mane is based on Misdreavus, and its wing-like hair may recall the Flying Head of folklore, a head with long hair and wings, or the Chonchon, which the Mapuche describe as a sorcerer's detached head that flies using its ears. These are fan readings.

In the games

Flutter Mane is one of the ancient Paradox Pokémon of Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A. A Flutter Mane and Iron Jugulis Spotlight raid event ran from 26 to 28 January 2024.
