Lore

Biology

Slither Wing is a big, moth-like creature on four legs, with red eyes and a spiny red horn on each side of its face. Messy, smoky-white fuzz covers its body and legs, it has a navy-blue thorax, and its long abdomen is teal with black dots. Its six leaf-like wings are orange, tipped in yellow-orange and marked with small green diamonds. It is 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) tall and weighs 92 kg (202.8 lb).

Behaviour

Little is recorded about Slither Wing's behaviour. The in-game magazine, as Bulbapedia summarises it, says few sightings have been reported and that some people theorise it was revived from fossils, although nobody has found Volcarona fossils from that period. It walks on four legs but can rise onto two, mostly during battles.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet it is found in Area Zero, and Violet players get one by trading with Scarlet.

Powers

Its only Ability is Protosynthesis, which raises its highest stat in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy. Attack is its highest at 135, so that is what gets the boost. It uses First Impression, Lunge, Dual Wingbeat, Leech Life and Superpower, and it can pick up Bulk Up and Morning Sun. With 135 base Attack and 85 HP it is a strong physical attacker.

Name origin

Slither Wing is literally a slithering wing. The Japanese name is Chiwohauhane (チヲハウハネ), which reads as chi o hau hane, roughly 'wings that crawl along the ground'.

Design inspiration

Slither Wing seems to blend Volcarona with its pre-evolution Larvesta. Bulbapedia suggests its long abdomen and flightless wings resemble a moth that has just emerged and not yet inflated its wings, and that its two-legged battle stance might nod to Mothman. Its futuristic counterpart is Iron Moth. These are fan readings.

In the games

Slither Wing is one of the ancient Paradox Pokémon of Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A. A Slither Wing and Iron Moth Spotlight raid event ran from 22 to 24 September 2023.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon has the kana ヲ in its Japanese name, since modern Japanese uses it only as a grammatical particle and a name written as a sentence gave a rare chance to use it.
  • At 3.2 m it shares the title of tallest Bug-type Pokémon with Mega Scolipede and Arceus's Bug form, according to Bulbapedia.
  • Its English name has 11 different characters including the space, which Bulbapedia notes ties it with Basculegion and Poltchageist.
