Lore
Biology
Heatmor is a bipedal anteater, 1.4 m tall and 58 kg, with red fur striped yellow like molten lava. Beige bands run along its belly and back like pipes leading to its tail, and the dented tail ends in a hole that looks like an engine's muffler. The Pokédex says it draws air in through that hole and turns it into fire.
Behaviour
Heatmor's life revolves around one meal. Durant is its preferred prey, and Bulbapedia notes the two make a predator and prey pair. Its weak point is the tail: if the hole gets blocked, the Pokédex says Heatmor falls ill.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. Wild Heatmor turn up on Victory Road in Black and White, on Twist Mountain in Black 2 and White 2, on Route 18 in X and Y, and on Route 6 and around the Wild Area in Sword and Shield.
Diet
Durant, whose steel shells it melts so that it can eat the insides.
Powers
Heatmor's moves suit its flame tongue: Incinerate, Fire Lash, Fire Spin and, at level 60, Flare Blitz. Its Abilities are Gluttony and Flash Fire, with White Smoke hidden. With base Special Attack 105 and Attack 97 it hits hard on either side, but its Defense and Special Defense are only 66.
Name origin
Heatmor may blend 'heat' with 'armor' or 'mortar', and may play on 'eat more'. The Japanese name is Kuitaran (クイタラン), which may combine the Japanese for anteater with tatara, a type of furnace, and pun on 食い足らん kuitaran, 'not eaten enough'.
Design inspiration
Ken Sugimori designed Heatmor and Durant. Bulbapedia says Heatmor mixes an anteater with touches of ironworks: its wrists resemble air intakes and its tail an engine muffler. Its Fire typing may have been chosen to beat Durant's Bug and Steel types, both weak to Fire.
In the games
Heatmor returned in Black 2, White 2, X and Y, and Sword and Shield after first appearing in Black and White. In Generation VII it was only available through Pokémon Bank, and it is unobtainable in Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Shamus's Heatmor debuted in 'Evolution by Fire!', where it and his Emboar took on Ash in a Double Battle, beating Snivy before losing to Tepig. In 'Jostling for the Junior Cup!', Manning's Heatmor beat Kenton's Golett at the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup.
