Lore
Biology
Iron Bundle is 0.6 m tall and weighs 11 kg. It is a red, bird-like robot with a white faceplate, two three-pointed crests, blue eyes, a pale yellow beak and two-toed feet. A metal ring at its neck hides the wire that lets its head extend over long distances, and a round bag hangs from its body on a black and blue cable. The Scarlet Pokédex says its shape matches a robot from a paranormal magazine, said to have been made by an ancient civilisation, and the Violet entry says it resembles an object in an old book.
Behaviour
Very little is known about its temperament. An in-game magazine says the Violet Book describes a Delibird-like being that fires huge blasts of ice from a round device to push itself along, and an unproven theory credits a long-gone civilisation with building it. Bulbapedia says it powers down to sleep, and the blue glow on its belly and bag turns black.
Habitat
The Pokédex names no habitat; the only hint is the in-game magazine's snowy lands. In Violet it is found in Area Zero, and Scarlet players need a trade.
Powers
Its Ability Quark Drive raises its highest battle stat, Speed, on Electric Terrain or when it holds Booster Energy. It begins with Present, which Delibird also learns, and later gets Freeze-Dry, Flip Turn, Ice Beam, Hydro Pump, Aurora Veil and Blizzard. With 136 Speed and 124 Special Attack it is a very fast special attacker, and Bulbapedia says its Speed is the highest of any Ice Pokémon and any Paradox Pokémon.
Name origin
The English name means a bundle made of iron, probably a nod to the bag it hauls around. The Japanese name is Tetsunotsutsumi (テツノツツミ), which Bulbapedia reads as 'iron bundle'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia ties Iron Bundle to Delibird. Its extendable head may echo a jack-in-the-box, a toy associated with Christmas, and its round device might owe something to snow globes or snow blowers. Its skiing feet look like water skis. No designer is credited, and these are fan readings.
In the games
Iron Bundle headlined a Tera Raid event called Iron Bundle the Unrivaled, after debuting in Scarlet and Violet. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Iron Bundle appears in 'Challenge the World!', an animated commercial for the 2023 Pokémon World Championships, as one half of an opponent's team with a Dondozo in a Scarlet and Violet match.
Fun facts
- Its Japanese name is the longest of any Pokémon in romaji, at 15 letters, which is more than the 12 letters allowed in a nickname in Western releases.
- Bulbapedia suggests its Ice and Water typing might recall Gifuto, Delibird's prototype in the Gold and Silver demo shown at Space World in 1997, which was a Water and Ice type.
- Bulbapedia calls it the shortest Paradox Pokémon overall.
