Lore

Biology

Joltik is a tiny yellow arachnid, 0.1 m tall and 0.6 kg, with four legs ending in blue conical feet and four blue eyes: two larger ones and two smaller simple eyes that have no eyelids or pupils, so they stay open when it blinks or sleeps. Yellow fur covers its egg-shaped body, with tufts on each side of the face, over the eyes and on the lower back. It keeps the power it collects in an electric pouch.

Behaviour

Joltik sticks to large Pokémon and soaks up their static electricity, and the Pokédex says it is often found on Yamper's hindquarters. Bulbapedia says it is not especially aggressive but defends itself if bothered, and in the anime it is left unable to move if it runs out of power.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it mainly lives in caves and in cities with electricity. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in The Indigo Disk, in the Canyon Biome, Chargestone Cavern and Polar Biome.

Diet

It feeds on static electricity, from larger Pokémon or from household sockets.

Powers

Joltik has Compound Eyes, which raises the accuracy of its moves, or Unnerve, which stops opponents eating held Berries, with Swarm hidden. It learns Electroweb, Thunder Wave and Electro Ball, and Bug Buzz at level 48. With a base Speed of 65 and Special Attack of 57 it is quick but frail.

Name origin

Joltik may combine 'jolt' and 'tick', the parasitic arachnid. The Japanese name is Bachuru (バチュル), possibly from bachibachi (crackling) and taranchura (tarantula).

Design inspiration

Its name, look and habit of draining static electricity from larger Pokémon suggest a tick. Bulbapedia also suggests a jumping spider or, like its evolution, a tarantula. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Joltik evolves into Galvantula at level 36.

In the games

Joltik lives in Chargestone Cave in Black and White, where it debuted. It returns in Sword and Shield, including the Wild Area and both expansions, and is absent from Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Joltik debuted in 'Oshawott's Lost Scalchop!', where Ash's Oshawott mistook one for its missing scalchop and the angry Joltik shocked it. In 'Reunion Battles In Nimbasa!' Sylvester's Joltik stuck itself to Georgia's Beartic and used Thunderbolt, but Beartic fell on it.
