Kingdra official artwork

Kingdra is a Water/Dragon-type Pokémon, the Dragon Pokémon, number 230 (#0230) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 152 kg.

Kingdra sleeps on ocean floors where the Pokédex says no other life can survive, saving up energy until a storm wakes it. Its yawn is said to create spiralling currents, and when it surfaces it can make whirlpools big enough to swallow ships.

Kingdra is pronounced KING-druh. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Kingdra is a blue seahorse, 1.8 m tall and 152 kg, with a yellow belly, thin branching spines on its head, white fins under its cheeks and a white dorsal fin braced by blue spines. Its thin snout can fire jets of water with devastating power. The Shield Pokédex says scales it sheds shine so splendidly that they have been given to royalty as gifts.

Behaviour

Kingdra hibernates on the seafloor, in caves and in the deepest parts of the sea, to build up energy. The Pokédex says it is said to wake when a storm arrives and wander in search of prey, and that it fights Dragonite fiercely whenever the two meet.

Habitat

The Pokédex puts Kingdra at extreme ocean depths no other life can reach, and in underwater caves. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain, Sniper strengthens critical hits, and Damp is hidden. Its Water and Dragon typing comes with Hydro Pump, Dragon Pulse, Draco Meteor, Dragon Dance and Wave Crash at level 72, plus Yawn and Whirlpool as a nod to its Pokédex. With 95 in Attack, Defense, Special Attack and Special Defense, and 75 HP, it is a well-rounded attacker.

Name origin

Kingdra may combine 'king' and 'dragon', and may also involve the Hydra, a mythical water monster. The Japanese name is Kingdra (キングドラ).

Design inspiration

Kingdra looks like a seahorse (Bulbapedia suggests the crowned seahorse) with a touch of seadragon. Bulbapedia suggests that its habit of stirring up whirlpools from the seafloor may recall the Greek sea monster Charybdis, or Ryūjin, the sea god of Japanese myth. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Trade a Seadra that is holding a Dragon Scale to get Kingdra, which does not evolve further.

In the games

Kingdra is a sync partner of Clair and of Lance in Pokémon Masters EX, according to Bulbapedia's availability listings. In Scarlet and Violet it can be had by evolving Seadra or from 5 star and 6 star Tera Raid Battles in The Indigo Disk, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Clair's Kingdra beat Ash's Noctowl in 'Fangs for Nothin'' during their Gym battle. In Pokémon Horizons, Drayton's Kingdra fought alongside his Archaludon in 'Terarium Training!'.

Fun facts

  • In the Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo, Bulbapedia says Seadra appears to have had a different evolution, called Kingudora, that evolved with a Dragon Scale and may have inspired Kingdra.
  • Bulbapedia points out that Generation II brought just one Dragon-type species, Kingdra.
  • Bulbapedia says the Chuang Yi edition of the Pokémon Adventures manga often misprints its name as 'Kingora'.
