Lore
Biology
Klefki is 0.2 m tall and weighs 3 kg. It looks like a grey-white key ring: a round head with a keyhole mouth, a pink teardrop body and a horn shaped like an old-fashioned key. A loop around it holds the keys it has collected. The Pokédex says it is so fond of keys that its head took on their shape.
Behaviour
Klefki is even-tempered, but it sneaks into homes to steal keys, and the Pokédex says it apparently likes only master keys. After soaking up a key's metal ions it may toss the key away, yet one it truly likes stays with it for decades.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it once lived in mines but moved into towns when its mineral food grew scarce. In Scarlet and Violet it is found on Glaseado Mountain and in South Province Area Six. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zones 17 and 20 and the Sewers, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.
Diet
It feeds on metal ions, which the Pokédex says it draws in through its horn.
Powers
Prankster lets its status moves go first, and Hidden Ability Magician steals a held item when it uses a damaging move. It sets up with Torment and Spikes, hits with Play Rough and Flash Cannon, and has sturdy Defense (91) and Special Defense (87).
Name origin
Klefki may combine 'clef' (French for key), 'key' and possibly kleftis, the Greek word for thief. The Japanese name is Cleffy (クレッフィ), possibly from 'clef' and 'fae'.
Design inspiration
Mana Ibe designed Klefki, and Junichi Masuda has said the design came from thinking about old mansions and secret keys. It may also nod to the old belief that fairies are to blame when keys go missing.
In the games
In Super Mystery Dungeon, Klefki keeps the Rockin' Lock shop in Lively Town and unlocks Treasure Boxes for 150 Poké. It debuted in X and Y, on Routes 15 and 16 and in the Lost Hotel.
In the anime
Klefki debuted in the short 'Pikachu, What's This Key?'. Monsieur Pierre's Klefki, first seen in 'Dreaming a Performer's Dream!', holds Princess Keys for Monsieur Pierre at Pokémon Showcases.
Fun facts
- Klefki is the only Pokémon that can learn Fairy Lock in the poke.si data, and in Generation VI it also had Crafty Shield as a signature move, says Bulbapedia.
- Bulbapedia notes that Klefki was the first Steel and Fairy type to debut with that combination, because Mawile was pure Steel when it first appeared.
- In Pokémon GO, says Bulbapedia, Klefki is region-locked and usually turns up only in France.
