Lore
Biology
Phantump is 0.4 m tall and weighs 7 kg: a wispy black body with nubby arms beneath a small brown stump, with a wavy branch sticking out of each side and red eyes visible through two holes. Old tales in the Pokédex say the spirit inside is a child who was lost in the forest.
Behaviour
Its cries sound like a child's voice or eerie screams, and people who follow them can end up hopelessly lost deep in the forest. The Pokédex says it wanders the woods searching for friends.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it prefers abandoned forests. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in Kitakami, from The Teal Mask, including 3-star Tera Raid Battles; in Paldea it arrives by trade or from HOME. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zone 13 of Rouge District, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Natural Cure heals status problems when it switches out, Frisk reveals a foe's held item, and Harvest is hidden. It uses Will-O-Wisp, Hex, Leech Seed and Phantom Force, and its signature Forest's Curse adds the Grass type to a target. Attack 70 is its best stat, and Speed 38 makes it slow.
Name origin
Phantump may combine 'phantom' and 'stump'. The Japanese name is Bokurei (ボクレー), possibly from the readings of the kanji in kodama (木霊): boku ('tree') and rei ('spirit').
Design inspiration
James Turner designed Phantump and Trevenant. Phantump looks modelled on the stump of a kodama, a Japanese tree spirit, and resembles other tree spirits such as dryads. Its Shiny colouring may reflect an aspen or birch.
Evolution notes
Phantump evolves into Trevenant when traded, with no held item needed.
In the games
In Sun and Moon Phantump lives at Memorial Hill, and in Sword and Shield in the Glimwood Tangle. It first appeared in X and Y, on Route 16 and in the Friend Safari's Ghost-type Safari.
In the anime
Phantump debuted in the series in 'Making Friends and Influencing Villains!', where Ash and his friends helped a Shiny one reach its mountaintop home. Goh caught one in 'A Festival Reunion!'.
