Lore
Biology
Koraidon is a large, reptilian Pokémon, 2.5 m tall and 303 kg, thickly feathered in scarlet, with white patches on its face, body and tail. A tire-like sac on its throat inflates and deflates with its build, a crest of feathers crowns its head, and a pair of long, twisted tendrils grows from its brow like eyebrows. Curved, handlebar-like structures sweep back from its shoulders, and its webbed feet each have four claws.
Behaviour
The Koraidon that joins the player is friendly and curious. It is cautious around people, but curiosity sometimes wins and it joins in their play. Bulbapedia calls the Apex Build self-assured, and an old expedition journal credits the Winged King with splitting the land using only its fists.
Habitat
The Pokédex names no habitat. In Pokémon Scarlet, Poco Path and Area Zero, the crater at the heart of Paldea, are the two places the game lists for it.
Powers
Its Ability Orichalcum Pulse turns the sunlight harsh when it enters battle and boosts its Attack while the sun lasts. Collision Course, a move only Koraidon learns, does about a third more damage when it is super effective, and it also uses Flare Blitz, Close Combat, Outrage and Dragon Claw. It has five builds: Apex for battle, Limited for when it is weakened or out of battle, and Sprinting, Swimming and Gliding for travel, where it runs on all fours, floats and paddles, or unfurls its brow tendrils into wings. With 135 Attack, 135 Speed and a total of 670, the highest of any Fighting type, it is a fast physical attacker.
Name origin
Koraidon may blend korai (ancient times) or kodai (ancient), the English words 'ride' and 'dragon', and either Spanish 'don' (lord) or the dinosaur-name ending -don; it may also be meant to sound like 'go ride on'. The Scarlet Book calls it the Winged King (Tsubasa no Ō, ツバサノオウ). The Japanese name is Koraidon (コライドン).
Design inspiration
Koraidon seems to blend lizards, feathered theropod dinosaurs and off-road motorbikes: its throat sac resembles that of fan-throated lizards, its brow tendrils recall a bird-of-paradise's plumes, and its shoulders and tire-like sac suggest handlebars and wheels. Its alternate name, the Winged King, may nod to Tyrannosaurus, the 'king' lizard, and its red colouring may allude to cave paintings. These are fan readings.
In the games
Koraidon is the box mascot of Pokémon Scarlet and a major character, accompanying the player throughout the journey. Violet players can obtain it only by trade or event. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
An Apex Build Koraidon first appeared in a Team Rocket segment aired after the episode JN137, found by Team Rocket in Paldea. It properly debuted in the Pokémon Horizons episode HZ148, where Roy found it and they unexpectedly joined a Cyclizar race, though it flew off just as the race was ending.
