Lore
Biology
Lampent is 0.6 m tall and weighs 13 kg. It has a clear, round head holding a bluish-purple flame and two oval yellow eyes, topped by a black cover that looks like a lampshade. Below the head is a small black body ending in a spike, with two long, wavy arms that have no fingers, and it gets around by drifting.
Behaviour
Lampent passes itself off as a lamp in cities, and the Pokédex says it quietly follows anyone whose death is near and hangs about hospitals. Bulbapedia adds that it can sense when a person is about to die and absorbs their spirit, and that it occasionally teams up with Litwick to steer people and Pokémon towards the Ghost World.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says Lampent is most often found in deep forests, though it also wanders cities. In Scarlet and Violet it is available by Pokémon HOME transfer or trade, and wild in The Teal Mask's Timeless Woods.
Powers
Lampent has the same Abilities as Litwick: Flash Fire and Flame Body, with Infiltrator hidden. It fights with Hex, Will-O-Wisp, Shadow Ball, Inferno and Overheat, and can even out HP with Pain Split. At base Special Attack 95 it hits harder than Litwick, but it is still only a stepping stone to Chandelure.
Name origin
Lampent may combine 'lamp', 'lambent' (softly glowing) and possibly 'lament'. The Japanese name is Lampler (ランプラー), which may come from 'lamp'.
Design inspiration
Lampent seems to draw on an oil street lamp and on hitodama. It may also borrow from the chōchin-obake, a haunted paper lantern, given a modern Western look, and its lampshade resembles a witch hat.
Evolution notes
Lampent evolves from Litwick, and into Chandelure if a Dusk Stone is used on it.
In the games
Lampent is reached by evolving Litwick in Black and White, its first game. In X and Y it was found in the Ghost-type Friend Safari. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Vert District's Wild Zone 17, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Lampent debuted in 'A Venipede Stampede!', where Trip uses it to help stop a swarm of Venipede in Castelia City. It also leads the Litwick quartet in 'Scare at the Litwick Mansion!'.
