Lore
Biology
Litwick is 0.3 m tall and weighs 3.1 kg. It is a small candle of white wax with two stubby arms and a purple flame on its head, and melted wax droops over its right eye so that only the bright yellow left eye shows. The Pokédex says its flame is usually out and only starts shining when it takes in life force. A Shield entry adds that a younger victim makes the flame burn brighter and eerier.
Behaviour
Litwick pretends to be a guide, lighting up dark places to lead people and Pokémon along. The Sword Pokédex says it leads lost children by the hand to the spirit world.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Unova it is found in the Celestial Tower, and in The Teal Mask it haunts places such as Infernal Pass and Crystal Pool in Kitakami.
Powers
Litwick has the Abilities Flash Fire and Flame Body, with Infiltrator hidden. It attacks with Ember, Hex, Shadow Ball and Fire Spin, and its best base stat is Special Attack 65.
Name origin
Litwick may combine 'lit', 'little', 'wick' and perhaps 'wicked'. The Japanese name is Hitomoshi (ヒトモシ), which may come from hi-tomoshi, 'lighting a lamp'.
Design inspiration
Litwick may take after a candle and after hitodama, also called will-o'-the-wisps, most of all the Japanese onibi, a ghostly light usually described as a blue flame that draws the life force out of anyone who gets close.
Evolution notes
Litwick evolves into Lampent at level 41.
In the games
Litwick is found in the Celestial Tower in Black and White, its first game. In Scarlet and Violet's base game it can only come from Pokémon HOME or a trade, but The Teal Mask adds wild ones. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Bleu District's Sewers, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Four Litwick debuted in 'Scare at the Litwick Mansion!', where, with a Lampent, they tried to lead Ash, his friends and Team Rocket to the Ghost World. A Litwick works at the Paldea Postal Service warming wax seals in the Pokémon Horizons short Dragonite and the Special Delivery.
