Lore
Biology
Lanturn is a blue, anglerfish-like Pokémon with red eyes inside a yellow mask-like marking and a tail fin with a jagged yellow lower half. A Y-shaped antenna on its back, a modified dorsal fin, ends in two glowing orbs. It is 1.2 m long and weighs 22.5 kg. The Pokédex says bacteria living in the antennae make the light by reacting with Lanturn's bodily fluids, and Bulbapedia notes the nickname 'the Deep-Sea Star'.
Behaviour
Lanturn dazzles its prey with a flash of light and swallows it whole. Another Pokédex entry says it follows the flash with an electric attack.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat is the sea, and Bulbapedia says Lanturn inhabits the depths of the ocean. In Scarlet and Violet it is found only in the Canyon Biome of The Indigo Disk.
Powers
Its Abilities are Volt Absorb and Illuminate, with Water Absorb hidden. It knows Stockpile, Spit Up and Swallow on evolving, and fights with Discharge, Hydro Pump, Eerie Impulse and Confuse Ray, with Aqua Ring at level 36. Its base 125 HP and balanced 76 and 76 special stats make it a bulky Water and Electric type.
Name origin
Lanturn may combine 'lantern' with 'turn', as in turning on a light. The Japanese name is Lantern (ランターン), which is simply the English word for the same object.
Design inspiration
Like Chinchou, Lanturn looks like an anglerfish, specifically the footballfish, and Bulbapedia says it also resembles a dolphin in places. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Lanturn evolves from Chinchou at level 27.
In the games
Lanturn is a Super Rod catch in Gold and Silver, where it first appeared. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it appears in SOS battles on Akala, and in Scarlet and Violet it shows up in 4-star Tera Raid Battles at Blueberry Academy. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Oliver's Lanturn debuted in 'The Mystery is History' and befriended a baby Lugia nicknamed Silver. In 'Lapras of Luxury', Naomi's Lanturn uses Supersonic to help her find Lapras that are singing.
