Lore
Biology
Ledyba is a small ladybird with a red head and back, a yellow lower jaw, big white eyes and black antennae. Its wing cases carry five black spots, which differ slightly between individuals, and its white hands look like boxing gloves. It is 1.0 m tall and weighs 10.8 kg. It communicates with scented fluid from its feet, which marks where it is and smells sour when it is angry.
Behaviour
Ledyba is very timid. Alone it is afraid to move, but in a group it is active, and when the weather turns cold many gather to cluster for warmth. The Pokédex says it is very sensitive to cold and looks quite lively in warm Alola.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat is forest, and Bulbapedia says it builds its nest on leaves in temperate forests and jungles. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Swarm and Early Bird, with Rattled hidden. It sets up Light Screen, Reflect and Safeguard, all at level 12, and later learns Baton Pass, Silver Wind and Bug Buzz. With base 80 Special Defense but only 20 Attack, it is a supporter rather than a fighter.
Name origin
Ledyba may come from 'ladybug' or 'ladybird', with a nod to 'red'. The Japanese name is Rediba (レディバ).
Design inspiration
Ledyba appears to be based on a ladybird, probably the Asian ladybeetle or seven-spot ladybird, judging by its bright red colour and black spots. Real ladybirds also swarm in cold weather and ooze a defensive fluid from their leg joints. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Ledyba evolves into Ledian at level 18.
In the games
In Johto Ledyba appears in the morning, and in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it is found by day on Alola's Route 1. Sword and Shield left it out, though Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl let you breed one from Ledian.
In the anime
Six Ledyba made their series debut in 'The Whistle Stop', where Arielle uses a whistle to send them to pollinate fruit plants and one of Team Rocket's schemes targets them.

- Bulbapedia calls Ledyba and Spinarak parallels: Ledyba is a Silver and SoulSilver exclusive and active in the morning, while Spinarak is a Gold and HeartGold exclusive and nocturnal.
- Bulbapedia says Ledyba sleep in groups of four in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
