Machoke official artwork

Machoke is a Fighting-type Pokémon, the Superpower Pokémon, number 67 (#0067) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 70.5 kg.

Machoke wears a power-save belt because its muscles are strong enough to be dangerous without one. Even so, it is a willing worker that carries heavy loads for people and treats every job as training.

How to pronounce Machoke

Machoke is pronounced muh-CHOHK. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Machoke is a 1.5 m, 70.5 kg bipedal Fighting type with blue-grey skin, a short reptilian snout, red eyes and three brown ridges on its head. A black and gold belt sits at its waist, and the Pokédex says it regulates the Pokémon's movements and holds its energy back. Its muscles are said to be as hard as steel, enough to hold a sumo wrestler up on one finger.

Behaviour

Machoke is modest and tireless. Pokédex entries have it hauling cargo, helping with construction and clearing land, all because the effort builds muscle. On days off it trains out in the fields and mountains, and its physique has made it a popular subject for sculptors.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in the mountains, where it trains every day.

Powers

Machoke has the same three Abilities as Machop: Guts, No Guard and the hidden Steadfast. It fights with Cross Chop, Submission and Dynamic Punch, and uses Bulk Up to raise its Attack and Defense. With base Attack 100 and Speed 45, it hits hard but slowly.

Name origin

Machoke may combine 'macho' (Spanish and Portuguese for 'male') with 'choke'. The Japanese name is Goriky (ゴーリキー), which may come from gōriki ('herculean strength').

Design inspiration

Machoke seems modelled on a bodybuilder or wrestler with some reptilian traits, and the belt resembles a wrestling championship belt.

Evolution notes

Machoke evolves from Machop at level 28 and into Machamp by trade, or with a Linking Cord in newer games.

In the games

Machoke has a speaking role in Pokémon Pokopia: a Machoke in Rocky Ridges teaches Ditto to use Strength and asks it to find Graveler, its old friend and go-to training weight, so it can apologise. A Generation I original, it cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zone 12, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Chuck's Machoke nearly beat Bayleef with Submission in 'Machoke, Machoke Man'. In 'Turning Over A New Bayleef', Haruno's Machoke helps with her gardening and finds Bayleef after she is swept away by rapids.

Fun facts

  • Pokédex entries disagree about the belt: Emerald says nobody has ever removed it, while Ultra Sun says Machoke takes it off to face a truly mighty enemy.
  • Machoke was purple before Generation VI, when its skin turned blue-grey.
  • The Official Pokémon Handbook calls it narcissistic, too busy admiring itself in a mirror to train, the opposite of Pokémon Stadium's line that it is always modest.
