Lore
Biology
Machop is a 0.8 m, 19.5 kg humanoid with blue-grey skin, large red eyes, a flat face, three brown ridges on its head and a short stubby tail. Its whole body is muscle, and the Pokédex says those muscles never cramp or get sore, however hard it exercises.
Behaviour
Machop never stops working out. It practises all kinds of martial arts, lifts rocks in the mountains and hefts a Graveler like a barbell. Some Machop travel the world to master every fighting style, and the Pokédex says one that has built up enough confidence and muscle challenges Makuhita to a fight.
Habitat
The Pokédex places it in the mountains, away from people. In the first games it is found in Kanto's Rock Tunnel and Victory Road.
Diet
Its instincts steer it towards highly nutritious food that helps it build muscle efficiently.
Powers
Its Abilities are Guts, which boosts Attack when it has a status condition, and No Guard, which makes every move used by or against it hit; Steadfast, which raises its Speed when it flinches, is hidden. It learns Low Kick, Revenge and Knock Off early, and Dynamic Punch later. Its base Attack is 80, but its Speed is just 35.
Name origin
Machop blends 'macho' (Spanish and Portuguese for 'male') with 'chop'. The Japanese name is Wanriky (ワンリキー), from wan ('arm') and riki ('strength'), echoing wanryoku ('physical strength').
Design inspiration
Machop seems modelled on a bodybuilder, with a few reptilian touches in its face, head crests, tail and blue-grey colouring.
Evolution notes
Machop evolves into Machoke at level 28, and Machoke becomes Machamp by trade, or with a Linking Cord in newer games.
In the games
A Generation I original, Machop cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it roams Wild Zones 8 and 12, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Brawly's Machop beat Taillow but lost to Ash's Treecko in 'Brave the Wave'. In 'Pop Goes The Sneasel', a wild Machop watches over Ho-Oh's flame at a shrine.
