Alakazam official artwork

Alakazam is a Psychic-type Pokémon, the Psi Pokémon, number 65 (#0065) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 48 kg.

Alakazam is the Psi Pokémon with a brain that never stops growing, an IQ the Pokédex puts above 5,000 and a memory of everything that has happened to it since it hatched. It wields a spoon in each hand, said to be made with its own power.

Lore

Biology

Alakazam is 1.5 m tall and weighs 48 kg: a slim, yellow, skeletal Pokémon with a long moustache, much shorter on females, narrow eyes, ear-like spikes and brown armour-like plates on its chest, shoulders, forearms and knees. Its brain cells keep multiplying, so its head grows heavier with age, and its weak muscles cannot hold it up, so it supports the head with psychic power.

Behaviour

Alakazam relies on thought rather than strength. The Pokédex says it calculates many things to gain an edge in battle, and its overflowing power gives anyone nearby a headache. Each spoon it makes is one of a kind, and if it trusts someone deeply it may give them one: the Ultra Moon entry says anything eaten with it tastes delicious.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is urban areas. In Legends: Z-A it appears as an Alpha Pokémon in Centrico Plaza's Wild Zone 20, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose; it is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

Powers

Its Abilities are Synchronize and Inner Focus, with Magic Guard hidden. It can use every kind of psychic power, with Psychic, Psyshock, Future Sight, Shadow Ball, Focus Blast and Calm Mind. Holding Alakazite lets it Mega Evolve: Mega Alakazam grows a white beard, a red organ on its forehead and three extra spoons, floats, and turns its muscle into pure psychic power, which the Pokédex says lets it foresee everything. With 135 base Special Attack and 120 Speed it is a fast glass cannon, and Mega Alakazam reaches 175 and 150.

Name origin

Alakazam comes from 'alakazam', a magician's incantation like 'abracadabra'. Its Japanese name, Foodin (フーディン), may honour Harry Houdini, the famous illusionist and escape artist.

Design inspiration

Alakazam seems modelled on a magician and spoon bender. Its pentagram-shaped head and fox-and-human look may allude to Abe no Seimei, a legendary Japanese court magician, and its horns, talons and long moustache resemble Chinese dragons. Mega Alakazam may draw on a sorcerer or wizard. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Alakazam evolves from Kadabra when it is traded, or with a Linking Cord in newer games, and is the final form of the Abra line.

In the games

Alakazam has been a Kanto Psychic fixture since Generation I. In Legends: Arceus the Pokédex notes that the heavier its head grows, the stronger its psychic power, and in Legends: Z-A its Lumiose Pokédex number is 64.

In the anime

Alakazam made its anime debut in 'The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis', when a giant one woke near the ruins. In 'Mission: Total Recall!', Faba's Alakazam beat Gladion's Umbreon.
