Lore
Biology
Abra is 0.9 m tall and weighs 19.5 kg: a slim, mostly yellow, fox-like Pokémon with a kite-shaped face, short pointed ears and eyes that are usually closed. Its body is segmented, with black skin showing at the joints, brown shoulder and chest plates and a thick, banded tail. Using psychic power strains its brain so much that it must sleep 18 hours daily or lose its powers.
Behaviour
Even asleep, Abra keeps a telepathic watch and teleports away at the first hint of trouble, though it can panic if it wakes somewhere unfamiliar. The Pokédex says the deeper it sleeps, the farther it jumps, and that its dreams affect its powers. It moves to a new spot about once an hour.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat is urban areas. In Legends: Z-A it is found in all five of Lumiose City's districts and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose; it is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.
Diet
Berries: the Sun Pokédex says it teleports into the treetops in its sleep to pick and eat them.
Powers
Its Abilities are Synchronize, which passes burns, paralysis and poison back to the attacker, and Inner Focus, with Magic Guard hidden. Teleport is its trademark, and it can also learn Psychic and Calm Mind. With 105 base Special Attack and 90 Speed but only 25 HP, 20 Attack and 15 Defense, it is fast and extremely frail.
Name origin
Abra may come from 'abracadabra', a stage magician's incantation. Its Japanese name, Casey (ケーシィ), may refer to Edgar Cayce, a reputed American psychic famous for entering trances.
Design inspiration
Abra seems to be modelled on a mystic or psychic, and it shares traits with foxes, animals tied to magic in myth. Its rat-like tail in early sprites and long sleeps could also hint at opossums. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Abra evolves into Kadabra at level 16, and Kadabra evolves into Alakazam when traded.
In the games
Abra carries you home in some games: one at the Indigo Plateau in Gold, Silver and Crystal teleports you to New Bark Town, and one at the Sinjoh Ruins does the same in HeartGold and SoulSilver. It dates from Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).
In the anime
In 'The Psychic Sidekicks!', Mrs. Bellows's Abra kept teleporting onto other people's heads. In 'Sandshrew's Locker!', Mira offered Ash and his friends a ride to Hearthome City with her Abra, if they helped find her Sandshrew.
