Kadabra

Kadabra is a Psychic-type Pokémon, the Psi Pokémon, number 64 (#0064) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs 56.5 kg.
Kadabra is the Psi Pokémon that carries a silver spoon to boost its psychic power, and its alpha waves can make clocks run backwards and machines misbehave. Without the spoon, the Pokédex says it is half as strong.

Lore
Biology
Kadabra is 1.3 m tall and weighs 56.5 kg: a yellow, slightly humanoid Pokémon with long pointed ears, a red star on its forehead and a moustache-like tuft on each side of its snout, longer on males. Three wavy red lines mark its belly, and it sleeps floating in the air with its springy tail as a pillow.
Behaviour
Kadabra's alpha waves can give people headaches and, the Pokédex says, ruin precision devices or cast an eerie shadow on TV screens that is said to bring bad luck. They grow stronger the more danger it faces. Several entries repeat a rumour that a boy with psychic powers he could not control became a Kadabra, though the Pokédex calls it unverified.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat is urban areas. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Magenta District's Wild Zone 9 and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose; it is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.
Powers
Its Abilities are Synchronize and Inner Focus, with Magic Guard hidden. The Pokédex says it focuses by staring at a silver spoon, and that a gold spoon will not do. It uses Psychic, Psycho Cut, Recover and Reflect, and with Alakazam is the only known Pokémon that can learn Kinesis. With 120 base Special Attack and 105 Speed, it is a fast, fragile attacker.
Name origin
Kadabra may come from 'abracadabra', a stage magician's incantation. Its Japanese name, Yungerer (ユンゲラー), may nod to Uri Geller, the illusionist known for spoon bending.
Design inspiration
Kadabra appears to be based on a magician and spoon bender, and its moustache tufts may exaggerate a fox's whiskers. The symbols on its forehead and belly resemble Zener cards, used in 1930s tests for extrasensory perception. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Kadabra evolves from Abra at level 16 and into Alakazam when traded, with no item needed.
In the games
In Legends: Arceus a Linking Cord can also evolve Kadabra into Alakazam, and in Legends: Z-A its Lumiose Pokédex number is 63. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).
In the anime
Kadabra debuted in 'Abra and the Psychic Showdown', when Sabrina's Abra evolved during her Gym battle with Ash, and it returned in 'Haunter versus Kadabra'.
Fun facts
- Kadabra had no new Trading Card Game card from 2003 until 2023, and almost no animated appearance from 2006 until 'The Show'; Bulbapedia thinks this likely stems from legal trouble with Uri Geller, who said in 2020 Nintendo could print the card again.
- Its Red and Green sprite lacked the star on its forehead and the pattern on its belly.
- Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia says the Red and Green boy-turned-Kadabra entry refers to an in-universe prize-winning novel, 'Transformation', whose plot seems to resemble Kafka's The Metamorphosis.

Pokédex entries
There are rumors that a child with mystical powers became a Kadabra; however, this remains unverified. I suspect that the spoon Kadabra holds enhances its brain waves. (Legends: Arceus)
This Pokémon's telekinesis is immensely powerful. To prepare for evolution, Kadabra stores up psychic energy in the star on its forehead. (Shield)
Using its psychic power, Kadabra levitates as it sleeps. It uses its springy tail as a pillow. (Sword)
Many odd things happen if this Pokémon is close by. For example, it makes clocks run backward. (Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)
It possesses strong mental capabilities, but its psychic powers are halved when it's not holding a silver spoon. (Ultra Moon)
It stares at a silver spoon to amplify its psychic powers before it lets loose. Apparently, gold spoons are no good. (Ultra Sun)
