Lore
Biology
Meganium is a large, pale green quadruped with a long neck, yellow eyes and stamen-like feelers that are longer on males. A big pink six-petalled flower circles its neck. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 100.5 kg. The Pokédex says anyone standing beside it feels as refreshed as in a sunny forest.
Behaviour
Meganium is very docile. The Pokédex says the scent of its flower soothes emotions, and that in battle it releases extra scent to take the fight out of its foe. Bulbapedia adds that Pokémon sleep peacefully beside it.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat is grassland, though Bulbapedia calls it rare in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it comes from evolving Bayleef in The Indigo Disk, and in Legends: Z-A from evolving Bayleef or from the 4★ Grass-type wild zones of the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Meganium knows Petal Dance, Petal Blizzard, Razor Leaf, Giga Drain and Solar Beam. Its Abilities are Overgrow and the hidden Leaf Guard. Mega Meganium, made with Meganiumite, is Grass and Fairy with the Ability Mega Sol, which lets it use moves as if the sun were harsh. It fires Solar Beams from four flowers and its base Special Attack jumps from 83 to 143. Meganium itself is a bulky supporter with 100 base Defense and Special Defense.
Name origin
Meganium may combine the prefix mega- with geranium, a flowering plant. The Japanese name is Meganium (メガニウム), spelled the same as the English one and possibly built the same way.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia says Meganium looks like a sauropod, especially Apatosaurus, with a flower based on a hybrid daylily and a neck that recalls the titan arum. Its proportions and face resemble a Galápagos tortoise, whose shell opens at the front the way the flower does. Mega Meganium's layered flowers resemble a ruff and jabot, and its foliage may recall bloomers. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Meganium evolves from Bayleef at level 32 and is the last stage of the Chikorita line.
In the games
Meganium is the final form of Johto's Grass starter line, introduced in Gold and Silver. In New Pokémon Snap it counts among the Illumina Pokémon, which are credited with saving the Lental region from a meteorite 2,000 years ago, and it sits at the Florio Island Illumina Spot. Mega Meganium debuted in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Vincent's Meganium debuted in 'The Legend of Thunder!'. In 'Odd Pokémon Out!', a Nurse Joy's Meganium becomes the crush of Ash's Grovyle and of a wild Tropius, though it only returns the Tropius's feelings.
Fun facts
- Among Pokémon introduced in Generation II, Meganium is both the heaviest and the tallest Grass type.
- The Chikorita line is the only starter line to keep its Japanese voices in the anime's English dub, which Bulbapedia puts down to their near-identical English and Japanese names; Meganium's is even spelled exactly like its Japanese romanisation.
- Its Legends: Z-A Pokédex entry also calls that Solar Beam the Mega Sol Cannon.
