Lore

Biology

Mienfoo is a yellow, bipedal, weasel-like Pokémon, 0.9 m tall and 20 kg, with rounded ears and red eyes, plus a pink nose that has a whisker at either side. Its red arms flare like sleeves, its thigh fur piles up like a robe and a small red band circles its chest. The Pokédex says its sharp claws can cut foes.

Behaviour

Mienfoo is small but fierce: the Pokédex says anything that approaches carelessly is met with a flurry of graceful attacks. Packs train together, each with its own form of kicks and chops, and in the morning they can be seen slowly moving through poses. Mienfoo takes pride in its speed and makes up for lack of power with quantity.

Habitat

The Pokédex says Mienfoo seclude themselves in the mountains to train. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami, from Oni Mountain to Wistful Fields.

Powers

Mienfoo's Abilities are Inner Focus, which stops it flinching, and Regenerator, which heals it when it switches out, with Reckless hidden. It opens with Fake Out, then uses Drain Punch, Aura Sphere, Force Palm and High Jump Kick, and it can set up with Calm Mind. Its highest base stats are Attack 85 and Speed 65.

Name origin

Mienfoo may combine 'ermine' and 'kung fu'. The Japanese name is Kojofu (コジョフー), possibly from okojo ('ermine') and kung fu.

Design inspiration

Mienfoo's look blends an ermine with a kung fu fighter, according to Bulbapedia's summary of a Nintendo Dream interview with Ken Sugimori. It may also be based on the kamaitachi, a clawed weasel yōkai from Japanese folklore, which is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Mienfoo evolves into Mienshao at level 50.

In the games

Mienfoo leads the team of Korrina, the Shalour City Gym Leader, in X and Y. It first appeared in Black and White. In Scarlet and Violet it can be caught wild in The Teal Mask and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Cliff's Mienfoo debuted in 'The Beartic Mountain Feud!', helping him guard a mountain. In 'Showdown at the Shalour Gym!', Korrina's Mienfoo fought Ash's Hawlucha in a Gym battle and lost.

Fun facts

  • Ken Sugimori told Nintendo Dream that Mienfoo and Mienshao exist because the game planners asked for animal-based Fighting types, since most earlier ones looked human.
  • In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Mienfoo is a resident of Lively Town who teaches martial arts to children such as Skiddo.
  • Mewtwo's flashback in the film 'Genesect and the Legend Awakened' features a Mienfoo.
