Lore
Biology
Misdreavus is a ghostly, dark bluish-green Pokémon with no real arms or legs. Its lower half is a ruffle of small tails like a dress, topped by long lilac-tipped 'hair' and large red eyes, and five red orbs hang round its neck. It is 0.7 m (2'04") tall and weighs 1 kg (2.2 lbs).
Behaviour
Misdreavus sleeps in the dark by day and spends the night pranking people. It sobs like a child, shrieks, appears suddenly, or sneaks up to bite and yank hair, all just to enjoy the shock. The Pokédex says scaring people is what gives its life meaning, and that it does not cope with people who are hard to frighten.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists Misdreavus as a cave Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild across much of South Province, in Tagtree Thicket and on Glaseado Mountain.
Powers
Its only Ability is Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground moves. It fights with Shadow Ball, Hex, Psybeam and Power Gem, and trips foes up with Confuse Ray, Mean Look and Perish Song. With a base 85 in Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed alike, it is a balanced, fast special attacker with only middling bulk.
Name origin
Misdreavus may combine 'mischievous' and 'dream', and could also involve 'mistress', 'miscreant', 'dread' and 'dreary'. Its Japanese name, Muma (ムウマ), may come from muma (夢魔), meaning a nightmare or a demon in a dream.
Design inspiration
Its wailing and floating-head look echo the nukekubi of Japanese folklore and the Irish banshee, and its sheet-like shape recalls a teru teru bōzu paper doll. Bulbapedia also floats Polish zmory, night spirits linked to hair. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Misdreavus evolves into Mismagius when a Dusk Stone is used on it.
In the games
Misdreavus has no major story role, but it has been around since Gold and Silver. In Scarlet and Violet it is a Violet exclusive that Scarlet players must trade for, and it appears in 2 star Tera Raid Battles. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
In 'Shocks and Bonds', Katie's Misdreavus used Destiny Bond to take Ash's Glalie down with it at the Ever Grande Conference. Goh caught one in 'Finding a Legend!' after it cast illusions at the Bell Tower.
