Lore

Biology

Mismagius is a purple, cloaked ghost with a round head topped by tufts like a witch's hat, a thin red mouth shaped like a W and three red spheres circling its upper body. Ragged extensions on its lower body look like a tattered cloak. It is 0.9 m (2'11") tall and weighs 4.4 kg (9.7 lbs).

Behaviour

Mismagius appears from nowhere, muttering incantations. The Pokédex says its chants torment people with headaches and terrifying visions, though some bring happiness. It is feared for its curses, yet the Legends: Arceus Pokédex describes a custom of inviting it into the house to ward off misfortune, and adds that upsetting it brings disaster.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, and Bulbapedia says it roams lakes and mountainsides at night. In Scarlet and Violet it is a Violet exclusive, found at Alfornada Cavern, Casseroya Lake, Glaseado Mountain and the north of Paldea, and Scarlet players must trade for it.

Powers

Its only Ability is Levitate. It opens with Mystical Fire, Phantom Force and Power Gem, and can also learn Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt and Nasty Plot. With 105 in each of Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed, it is a fast special attacker.

Name origin

Mismagius may combine 'mischievous' or Misdreavus with 'magus' or 'magic'. Its Japanese name, Mumargi (ムウマージ), may join muma (夢魔, nightmare) with maji (蠱, to bewitch), or with 'mage' or 'magic'.

Design inspiration

Mismagius seems to be based on mages and witches. Its purple colour may recall the Nasu-babā, a purple-skinned witch yōkai, and its red orbs could echo the red korale beads of 19th-century Poland, said to hold magical power. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Mismagius evolves from Misdreavus when a Dusk Stone is used on it.

In the games

Mismagius is Gym Leader Fantina's signature Pokémon, and in Diamond and Pearl, where it first appeared, it is the last of her three at level 36. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 5 star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Mismagius debuted in 'Malice In Wonderland!', casting illusions that showed Ash and his friends what they wanted most. Fantina used one against Ash in her Gym battle in 'Shield with a Twist!', and 'Coming Full-Festival Circle!' revealed that Zoey's Misdreavus had become one.

Fun facts

  • Nob Ogasawara gave Mismagius its English name.
  • Bulbapedia pairs it with Honchkrow, the other Dusk Stone evolution of Generation IV: Mismagius is exclusive to Pearl, White and Shining Pearl, and Honchkrow mirrors it exactly in Diamond, Black and Brilliant Diamond.
  • In the Discover Pokémon Together series, a wild Mismagius saves a Maushold from a rampaging Scovillain using Hypnosis and Icy Wind.
