Mr. Mime

Mr. Mime is a Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon, the Barrier Pokémon, number 122 (#0122) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.3 m tall and weighs 54.5 kg.
Mr. Mime is a pantomime artist whose invisible walls are real, because the Pokédex says its fingertips harden the air itself. Interrupt its act, or fail to look impressed, and it slaps you with its broad hands.

Lore
Biology
Mr. Mime is a humanoid clown-like Pokémon, 1.3 m tall and 54.5 kg, with a pale pink head, blue tufts like clown hair at its temples, round magenta cheeks, big white gloves for hands and dark blue shoes that curl up at the toes.
Behaviour
The Gold Pokédex says Mr. Mime is a skilled mime from birth and gains the power to make invisible objects as it matures. The Pokédex says its gestures convince watchers that something unseen is there, and once they believe it, the thing becomes real.
Habitat
The game data lists its habitat as urban, and Bulbapedia says it is usually very rare. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it comes by trade and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Soundproof blocks sound-based moves, Filter reduces damage from super-effective moves, and Technician, its hidden Ability, boosts weak moves. It learns Light Screen, Reflect, Safeguard and Psychic. Its Special Defense of 120 is its best stat. It was a pure Psychic type before Generation VI. Galarian Mr. Mime is an Ice and Psychic type that tap dances and makes a floor of ice, with Vital Spirit, Screen Cleaner and hidden Ice Body.
Name origin
Mr. Mime is 'Mister' plus 'mime'. The Japanese name is Barrierd (バリヤード), which may combine 'barrier' and 'weird'.
Design inspiration
Mr. Mime seems based on a mime artist acting out an invisible box, dressed in a clown's or jester's colours. Bulbapedia suggests its curled shoes also recall elves, which may explain the Fairy type it gained in Generation VI, and Galarian Mr. Mime appears based on tap dancers and ice skaters. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Mime Jr. evolves into Mr. Mime when it levels up knowing Mimic. In Galar it becomes Galarian Mr. Mime instead, which evolves into Mr. Rime from level 42.
In the games
A Generation I original, Mr. Mime headlines its own Pokémon Stadium 2 minigame, Barrier Ball, where it uses Barrier to bounce Poké Balls into goals.
In the anime
Delia Ketchum's Mr. Mime, nicknamed Mimey, arrives in 'It's Mr. Mime Time', where she mistakes it for Ash in a costume. In the live-action film Pokémon Detective Pikachu, a Mr. Mime is questioned at Ryme Wharf.
Fun facts
- The Mr. Mime from an in-game trade in Red and Blue is nicknamed Marcel, possibly after the French mime Marcel Marceau, and a Galarian Mr. Mime in Sword and Shield shares the name.
- In Legends: Arceus its barrier makes thrown Poké Balls bounce off, which Bulbapedia says makes it the one wild Pokémon that can stop you battling it.
- Bulbapedia says translator Nob Ogasawara worried the 'Mr.' would cause trouble if later games gave Pokémon genders.
