Lore

Biology

Mr. Rime is a humanoid Pokémon, 1.5 m tall and 58.2 kg. Black clown-hair growths cover its head like a bowler hat, and a moustache hides its mouth. Its torso is black and white like a tuxedo and doubles as a second face, and Bulbapedia says its real face stays nearly blank while the torso's features show its emotions. It always carries a blue cane made of ice.

Behaviour

Mr. Rime is a skilled tap dancer and swings its ice cane in time with its graceful steps. Its funny routines make it popular, and the Pokédex treats the dancing as its trademark. Bulbapedia says the Mime Jr. of Galar copy its steps, which leads them to evolve.

Habitat

Neither the Pokédex nor the game data gives a habitat; Bulbapedia describes it as native to Galar. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

Powers

Tangled Feet doubles its evasion when confused, Screen Cleaner wipes away Light Screen, Reflect and Aurora Veil, and Ice Body is hidden. Its moves include Freeze-Dry, Psychic, Mirror Coat and Triple Axel, and its best stat is Special Attack at 110.

Name origin

Mr. Rime may combine 'Mister' with 'rime', a type of frost. The Japanese name is Barrikohru (バリコオル), which may combine 'barrier' with 凍る kōru ('to freeze').

Design inspiration

Mr. Rime seems to blend a mime artist, a tap dancer and Charlie Chaplin's Tramp character, whose bowler hat, cane and moustache it shares. Galar is inspired by the UK, Chaplin's home country. Bulbapedia also suggests the haradashi, a yōkai with a face on its belly that cheers up lonely people. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Galarian Mr. Mime evolves into Mr. Rime at level 42. A Mime Jr. becomes a Galarian Mr. Mime by levelling up in Galar while knowing Mimic.

In the games

In Sword and Shield, where it debuted, Mr. Rime turns up in Max Raid Battles. In Legends: Z-A it comes by trade, or from the Mega Dimension DLC's 4-star Ice-type wild zones in Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Leon's Mr. Rime debuted in 'A Flood of Torrential Gains!' as the third Pokémon he used against Ash in the Masters Eight Tournament. In Pokémon: Twilight Wings, a street performer's Mr. Rime puts on a show alongside its Trainer in 'Assistant'.

Fun facts

  • Despite the 'Mr.' in its name, Mr. Rime is male or female with equal chance.
  • Bulbapedia says Mr. Rime is the only Generation VIII Pokémon that can know moves unusable in Sword and Shield, such as Barrier, if it evolved from a Mime Jr. that learned them in an earlier game.
  • Its desaturated Shiny colouring may reference the black and white of silent films, Bulbapedia suggests.
