Lore
Biology
Munchlax is a round teal Pokémon, 0.6 m tall and 105 kg, with a cream lower face and a cream chest patch like a bib. It has big round eyes, large pointed ears and two pointed teeth that stick out even when its mouth is shut.
Behaviour
Munchlax is slow-moving but hyperactive around food. The Pokédex says it tucks food away under its long fur and then forgets about it, and the Legends: Arceus entry has it visiting villages for compost scraps. One entry says it will share a single bite, but only with someone it really trusts.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat; in Sinnoh it turns up around honey-smeared trees. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami (The Teal Mask); the base game needs a trade or transfer.
Diet
Anything that looks edible, rotten or fresh, swallowed whole: the Pokédex says it needs its own weight in food daily.
Powers
Its Abilities are Pickup and Thick Fat, with Gluttony hidden. It uses Body Slam and Metronome, and recovers with Stockpile and Swallow. Its base HP of 135 is large for a baby, but its base Speed of 5 is tiny.
Name origin
Munchlax may combine 'munch' with 'lax', 'relax' or Snorlax. The Japanese name Gonbe (ゴンベ) may mix Kabigon (Snorlax) with 'baby', and may play on gonbē, an old placeholder name for a peasant.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia suggests Munchlax is modelled on a bear cub: its raids on rubbish and compost and its love of honey match bear behaviour, and the chest patch resembles a bib. These are fan readings, not official statements.
Evolution notes
It evolves into Snorlax when levelled up with high friendship. In several games a Munchlax can be obtained by breeding a Snorlax that holds a Full Incense.
In the games
Professor Rowan sends out a Munchlax in the intro of Diamond and Pearl, its Generation IV home games, and Barry owns another. In Legends: Arceus, Mai's Munchlax can be fed Aguav Berries to shape a massive mass outbreak. It is in Scarlet and Violet's Kitakami, but not in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
May caught one in 'Berry, Berry Interesting' after it loved her Pokéblocks, its series debut. In the film 'Destiny Deoxys' it provided comic relief and evolved into Snorlax to stay afloat in a flood.
Fun facts
- Its Super Smash Bros. Brawl trophy gives Diamond and Pearl as its debut, yet it had already appeared in four games before Generation IV, including Pokémon Dash and XD: Gale of Darkness.
- You can choose Munchlax as one of your Partner Pokémon at the start of Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia.
- Its mouth has been drawn wider in later games and animation, so its Pokémon HOME model no longer matches its official artwork.

Stuffing itself with vast amounts of food is its only concern. Whether the food is rotten or fresh, yummy or tasteless—it does not care. (Sword)
