Snorlax is a Normal-type Pokémon, the Sleeping Pokémon, number 143 (#0143) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 2.1 m tall and weighs 460 kg.

Snorlax is the Sleeping Pokémon, a mountain of a Normal type that does little except eat and nap. In the early games one sleeps across the road, and nothing short of a Poké Flute will shift it.

Lore

Biology

Snorlax is a huge bipedal mammal with dark blue-green fur, a cream face, belly and feet, small pointed ears and two teeth poking up from its lower jaw. At 2.1 m tall and 460 kg it is the heaviest Normal type. The Pokédex says its stomach shrugs off rotten food and dissolves any poison, and that it needs close to 400 kg of food a day.

Behaviour

Snorlax wakes only to eat, and can eat while dozing. Once asleep it is almost impossible to rouse. It is docile enough to let children bounce on its belly, but Mr. Fuji warns in the games that a Snorlax may attack the first thing it sees on waking, mistaking it for food. The Pokédex says villages count a Snorlax raid on their rice stores as a disaster.

Habitat

Mountains and forests. In older games wild Snorlax are found asleep across paths and bridges. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami's Timeless Woods and turns up in Tera Raids.

Diet

Almost anything, around 400 kg of it a day. The Pokédex says mouldy food and even poison do it no harm.

Powers

Snorlax flattens foes with Body Slam and Heavy Slam, heals by sleeping with Rest, and uses Belly Drum to max out its Attack at the cost of half its health. It can have Immunity or Thick Fat, with Gluttony hidden. Only Snorlax can use the Z-Move Pulverizing Pancake, and Gigantamax Snorlax, which looks like a small hill with trees on it, has G-Max Replenish. Base HP 160 and Attack 110 make it a classic tank.

Name origin

Snorlax likely blends 'snore' with 'lax' or 'relax'; it was suggested by Bill Giese, who named many Generation I Pokémon in English. The Japanese name Kabigon (カビゴン) comes from Kirby: Game Freak developer Kōji Nishino was nicknamed 'Kirby' for his enormous appetite.

Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori drew Snorlax, and Junichi Masuda has said its constant eating and sleeping were modelled directly on Kōji Nishino. It looks like a cross between a hibernating bear and a teddy bear, living in the permanent 'food coma' that follows a huge meal.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Munchlax through friendship.

In the games

Its road-blocking Poké Flute puzzle goes back to Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). The Trainer Red owns one, Hop uses one in Sword and Shield, and Kōji Nishino himself appears as a Trainer with a Snorlax in Black and White. In Scarlet and Violet it is in the Timeless Woods or comes by transfer.

In the anime

Debuted in 'Wake Up Snorlax!', where Ash and friends must wake one that has blocked a village's river. Ash caught one that was eating the Grapefruit Islands bare in 'Snack Attack!'.

Pokédex entries

This Pokémon's stomach is so strong, even eating moldy or rotten food will not affect it. (Crystal, Shield)

This glutton appears in villages without warning and devours the entirety of their rice granaries—such occurrences have long been counted among the gravest of disasters. (Legends: Arceus)

It is not satisfied unless it eats over 880 pounds of food every day. When it is done eating, it goes promptly to sleep. (FireRed, X, Sword)

Will eat anything, even if the food happens to be a little moldy. It never gets an upset stomach. (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

It has no interest in anything other than eating. Even if you climb up on its stomach while it's napping, it doesn't seem to mind at all! (Ultra Moon)

It doesn't do anything other than eat and sleep. When prompted to make a serious effort, though, it apparently displays awesome power. (Ultra Sun)
