Lore
Biology
Necrozma is 2.4 m tall and weighs 230 kg. Its body is black crystal, and its face is a prism that Bulbapedia says glows white while it absorbs light. The big growth on its head is a tail marked with an eight-pointed star. The Pokédex says it needs light to survive and goes on a rampage to find it, and that without devouring light, impurities build up and it darkens and stops moving.
Behaviour
Necrozma is fierce. The Moon entry calls its disposition extraordinarily vicious, with lasers constantly firing, while the Ultra Sun entry says it seems to be in pain as it storms about hunting for light. Bulbapedia says it can open Ultra Wormholes.
Habitat
The Sun entry says it was apparently asleep underground and is thought to have arrived from another world long ago, much like the Ultra Beasts.
Diet
Light, which the Pokédex calls its source of energy. Bulbapedia adds that it loves the Necrozma Treats Snacksworth makes.
Powers
Its Ability, Prism Armor, cuts super-effective damage to three quarters. Its signature moves are Photon Geyser, a pillar of light that uses whichever of its Attack or Special Attack is higher (level 72), and Prismatic Laser (level 88). Fused with Solgaleo using the N-Solarizer it becomes Dusk Mane Necrozma, Psychic and Steel, and with Lunala and the N-Lunarizer it becomes Dawn Wings Necrozma, Psychic and Ghost. Holding Ultranecrozium Z, either can use Ultra Burst to become Ultra Necrozma, a 7.5 m Psychic and Dragon form with the Ability Neuroforce and base stats totalling 754. Only Ultra Necrozma can use the Z-Move Light That Burns the Sky.
Name origin
Necrozma may combine the Greek nekrós ('dead'), the Japanese kuro ('black') and prism or plasma, with the Z possibly hinting at an ending or at Z-Moves. The Japanese name is the same, Necrozma (ネクロズマ).
Design inspiration
Hitoshi Ariga designed Necrozma's draft and assisted with Ultra Necrozma. Its design seems to come from prisms and the way they bend light. Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings may stand for solar and lunar eclipses, whose Japanese names can be read as 'eating the sun' and 'eating the moon'. These are fan readings.
In the games
Necrozma is the main threat of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, whose boxes show its fused forms, after first waiting in Ten Carat Hill in Sun and Moon. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or Pokémon HOME, and The Indigo Disk lets you find one at Socarrat Trail once Snacksworth gives you a Necrozma Treat. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Necrozma physically debuted in 'Filling the Light with Darkness!' and was the antagonist of a late arc of the Sun and Moon series, tied to the homeworld of Ash's Poipole, until it was restored to Ultra Necrozma in 'Securing the Future!' when Alola's people gave it Ultra Aura.
Fun facts
- Whether it is an Ultra Beast depends on the medium: Beast Balls do not work on it in the games and the Pokédex separates it from them, but in the anime the Aether Foundation labelled it UB Black.
- It has access to three exclusive Z-Crystals, more than any other Pokémon: Ultranecrozium Z of its own, plus the Solganium Z and Lunalium Z it shares with Solgaleo and Lunala.
- At the 2023 Pokémon World Championships, a segment on commonly mispronounced names gave its pronunciation as neh-KROHZ-muh.
