Nidorina is a Poison-type Pokémon, the Poison Pin Pokémon, number 30 (#0030) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 20 kg.

Nidorina is the gentle, caring side of the Poison Pin Pokémon: the Pokédex says it tucks away its barbs whenever it is with friends or family, and chews food into a paste to feed its young.

Lore

Biology

Nidorina is 0.8 m tall and weighs 20 kg. It is sky-blue with dark blue patches, red eyes, big spiny ears and two pointed upper teeth, and it can stand on its longer, thicker hind legs. It is a female-only species, and the Pokédex says its horn grows slowly.

Behaviour

Nidorina is gentle and prefers not to fight. In a group, feeding its young or resting in its burrow, it retracts its barbs, and it becomes nervous if separated from its family; if threatened it raises them all. Several entries mention ultrasonic cries that befuddle foes or band together to attack in a chorus.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Grassland, and Bulbapedia says it lives in burrows in hot savannas and plains.

Powers

Its Ability is Poison Point, which can poison attackers on contact, or Rivalry, with Hustle hidden. It scratches and bites, uses Toxic Spikes and Poison Jab, and finishes with Earth Power or Crunch. With 70 base HP it is a sturdy mid-stage Poison type.

Name origin

Nidorina may combine 'needle', 'rhinoceros' and the feminine -ina ending of Spanish and Italian, and may also play on nido (二度, 'twice'). The Japanese name is Nidorina (ニドリーナ).

Design inspiration

Nidorina appears to draw on rabbits, porcupines and rhinos, with traits of venomous mammals. Bulbapedia says its rabbit-like looks and its Moon Stone evolution may reference the Moon rabbit of legend. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Nidorina evolves from Nidoran♀ at level 16 and becomes Nidoqueen with a Moon Stone.

In the games

Bulbapedia lists Nidorina as catchable in Let's Go, the Crown Tundra of Sword and Shield, and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).

In the anime

Emily's Nidoran♀ Maria evolved into a Nidorina in 'Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?' after kissing Ralph's Nidoran♂. In 'A Goldenrod Opportunity', Whitney's Nidorina lost to Ash's Cyndaquil, which beat it with two Flamethrowers.

Fun facts

  • The Sword Pokédex entry says Nidorina's horn has atrophied, apparently so that its children are not poked while it feeds them.
  • Bulbapedia counts Nidorina and Nidoqueen as the only two Pokémon unable to breed when their first stage can; Japanese guidebooks set this up before breeding was a game mechanic, though several Pokédex entries still imply Nidorina raises young.
  • Nidorina shares the Poison Pin Pokémon category with Poipole and Naganadel, Bulbapedia notes.
