Lore

Biology

Numel is a yellow, four-legged Pokémon, 0.7 m tall and 24 kg, built like a dromedary camel with a single hump shaped like a volcano. The hump is green at the top and shades into yellow, dotted with small green spots. It has bangs, sleepy eyes ringed in brown and short, stubby legs. A female has a bigger hump than a male, and the same is true of the volcanoes on its evolution, Camerupt.

Behaviour

Numel is gentle and rarely attacks without provocation. The Emerald Pokédex says it is hardy enough to carry a 100 kg (220 lb) load and has worked for humans since long ago. If it gets wet, the Pokédex says, its magma cools and hardens and its body grows heavy and slow.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in the mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in West Province (Area One) and Area Zero, and in The Indigo Disk's Coastal and Polar Biomes and Torchlit Labyrinth. In Legends: Z-A it is in Jaune District's Wild Zone 8, and again in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Powers

Its Abilities are Oblivious and Simple, with Own Tempo hidden. It spits Ember and Flamethrower, and stomps with Bulldoze and Earthquake; the Pokédex says its hump shrinks whenever it uses Fire-type moves, and Bulbapedia explains that the magma inside is being consumed. Its 65 base Special Attack is modest, and Numel is mostly a step towards Camerupt.

Name origin

Numel may combine 'numb' and 'camel'. The Japanese name is Donmel (ドンメル), which may blend don, 'dull, slow, stupid', with 'camel'.

Design inspiration

Numel appears to be a stylised dromedary camel with its hump turned into a dormant volcano. Its barrel-shaped body and simple limbs may also recall a mule- or donkey-shaped piñata. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Numel evolves into Camerupt at level 33.

In the games

Team Magma Grunts use Numel in Ruby and Sapphire, the games where it first appeared.

In the anime

Julie's Numel appear in 'Game Winning Assist!', where Ash and his friends find a meadow full of them and Team Rocket tries to steal them. In that episode James explains that his grandfather bought him some Numel as a winter warmer.
