Parasect official artwork

Parasect is a Bug/Grass-type Pokémon, the Mushroom Pokémon, number 47 (#0047) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 29.5 kg.

Parasect is more mushroom than bug. The Pokédex says the giant cap on its back has taken over completely, and that the insect carrying it barely does anything on its own.

Lore

Biology

Parasect is a red-orange insect with a small head and plain white eyes, its segmented body mostly hidden under a big red mushroom cap with yellow spots. Its front legs form large pincers. It is 1.0 m tall and weighs 29.5 kg. The Pokédex says the bug is mostly dead, and if the mushroom comes off it stops moving. The larger the cap grows, the stronger the spores it scatters, and Alola's spores are said to be poor quality.

Behaviour

Parasect prefers the dark, damp places that the mushroom likes best, and the Pokédex says it fights Shiinotic over territory. Its spores are used in traditional medicine.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is forest, and Bulbapedia says dark, humid woods suit the fungus. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says swarms drain the nutrients from the base and roots of big trees, then move on together when a tree dies.

Powers

Its Abilities are Effect Spore, which can paralyse, poison or sleep attackers, and Dry Skin, with Damp hidden. It uses Spore, Cross Poison, X-Scissor and Giga Drain, and can power up with Swords Dance. Its base Attack of 95 is high for its line, but its Speed is only 30.

Name origin

Parasect may combine 'parasite' and 'insect'. The Japanese name is Parasect (パラセクト), the same as in English.

Design inspiration

Parasect keeps Paras's cicada-nymph look and may also draw on the umbrella crab, with a mushroom standing in for its shell. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Parasect evolves from Paras at level 24 and is the last stage.

In the games

Parasect is a trial Pokémon in Sun's Lush Jungle, where Shiinotic takes its place in Moon, and it first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).

In the anime

Parasect debuted in 'The Problem with Paras', where Cassandra's Paras evolved so she could use its giant mushroom in her medical research. In 'Gulpin it Down', Officer Jenny uses one to help stop a huge army of Gulpin.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says a Parasect with Dry Skin takes over four times damage from Fire moves, which no other Pokémon manages naturally without Forest's Curse.
  • In Pokémon Pearl, the Japanese Parasect entry was left over from Blue and LeafGreen, the only recycled entry in the Sinnoh games.
  • In Crystal's Pokédex entry, once the bug has nothing more to give, the mushrooms seed its egg with spores.

Pokédex entries

Mushroom-lacking specimens of this Pokémon lie unmoving in the forest, lending credence to the hypothesis that the large mushroom is in control of Parasect's actions. (Legends: Arceus)

The bug host is drained of energy by the mushroom on its back. The mushroom appears to do all the thinking. (Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

Its poisonous spores are also used in traditional medicine. Apparently, spores produced in Alola are not of very good quality. (Ultra Moon)

The bug is mostly dead, with the mushroom on its back having become the main body. If the mushroom comes off, the bug stops moving. (Ultra Sun)

It scatters toxic spores from its mushroom cap. Once harvested, these spores can be steeped and boiled down to prepare herbal medicines. (Moon)

The large mushroom on its back controls it. It often fights over territory with Shiinotic. (Sun)
