Lore
Biology
Patrat is a brown, chipmunk-like rodent, 0.5 m tall and 11.6 kg, with a tan face and belly, a black band across its eyes, one large pointed tooth and round cheeks that act as food pouches. Its long tail ends in a scruffy white tip and is usually held upright.
Behaviour
Patrat is extremely cautious and feels insecure without a lookout, so the Pokédex says the members of a group take shifts watching their nest. It can keep watch for days on food stored in its cheek pouches, and it uses its tail to signal to others. In the anime it lives in tunnels.
Habitat
The Pokédex names no habitat. In Black and White it is found on Routes 1, 2 and 3 and in the Dreamyard.
Powers
Its Abilities are Run Away and Keen Eye, with Analytic hidden. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it learns Bite at level 6, Crunch at 16, Super Fang at 21 and Baton Pass at 38, and it can use Hypnosis and Mean Look. Attack of 55 is its best stat, so it is a very light fighter.
Name origin
Patrat may combine 'patrol' and 'rat', and is also a play on 'pack rat'. The Japanese name is Minezumi (ミネズミ), which may blend mi (looking) and nezumi (mouse).
Design inspiration
Patrat seems to draw on a meerkat, a chipmunk or a prairie dog, and its endless lookout habit seems to reference scouts on reconnaissance. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Patrat evolves into Watchog at level 20.
In the games
Patrat is one of the first wild Pokémon you meet on Unova's early routes in Black and White. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it is found in many Lumiose City districts and the sewers, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Patrat debuted in 'In the Shadow of Zekrom!'. In 'Emolga the Irresistible!', three Patrat were gathering apples when a greedy Emolga tricked them with Attract and stole the harvest.
