Lore
Biology
Pidgeotto is a brown bird with a cream face and underside, a pinkish-red crest, black angular markings behind its eyes and a tail of ragged red and yellow feathers. It is 1.1 m tall and 30 kg, with powerful talons that it uses to grip its prey.
Behaviour
Pidgeotto is fiercely territorial. It circles its domain through the day, watching for food and intruders, and the Pokédex says it shows no mercy to anyone who trespasses, punishing them with its claws. Bulbapedia says its nest is usually in the middle of its territory.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat list says Forest, and Bulbapedia says it is most often found in temperate forests. In Legends: Z-A it is found across Lumiose City's districts.
Diet
Prey Pokémon such as Exeggcute, according to the FireRed Pokédex, and Bulbapedia adds Magikarp. In the anime it hunts Caterpie.
Powers
It shares Pidgey's Abilities: Keen Eye, Tangled Feet and the hidden Big Pecks. Gust, Quick Attack and Whirlwind come early, Wing Attack at level 37 and Hurricane at level 62. Feather Dance was its signature move in Generation III. Its base Speed of 71 and Attack of 60 make it a modest fast striker.
Name origin
Pidgeotto may combine 'pigeon' and the Italian diminutive ending -otto. The Japanese name is Pigeon (ピジョン), literally 'pigeon'.
Design inspiration
Despite its name, Pidgeotto is closer to a raptor, an osprey or eagle, than to a pigeon, given its size and hunting habits, and its red crest is similar to a cockatoo's. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Pidgeotto evolves into Pidgeot at level 36.
In the games
Blue uses a Pidgeotto in three separate rival battles in Red, Blue and their remakes, and Falkner uses one in his Gym. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), is in the base game of Legends: Z-A (Lumiose Pokédex number 22), and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.
In the anime
Ash caught a Pidgeotto in 'Ash Catches a Pokémon', which was also the species' debut. It stayed on his team until it evolved into Pidgeot in 'Pallet Party Panic'.
