Lore
Biology
Pidove is a small grey pigeon with golden eyes, a head tuft, a short black beak with a pink cere and a pale heart-shaped patch on its chest. Its wings are black with a grey stripe. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2.1 kg.
Behaviour
Pidove is sincere and not very bright. The Pokédex says it is so forgetful that it waits for a new order even when it already has one, and it often fails to understand complicated commands. It has no fear of people and loves to follow them.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it lives in cities, in parks and plazas. In Galar it roams the Rolling Fields and the Wild Area's lakes, with Max Raid Battles in the Isle of Armor's Loop Lagoon. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Big Pecks stops its Defense being lowered, Super Luck raises its critical-hit rate, and the hidden Rivalry boosts damage against the same gender but weakens it against the opposite. It learns Gust, Quick Attack, Air Slash and finally Sky Attack. With 55 base Attack and 50 base HP it is a modest early flier.
Name origin
Pidove may blend 'pigeon' and 'dove', or 'dove' and 'love' for its heart motif. The Japanese name is Mamepato (マメパト), possibly from mame (tiny, or diligent) and hato (pigeon).
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia credits Reiko Tanoue as the designer, citing a Pokémon Peer interview. Its design draws on pigeons and doves, and the heart motif is a pun, since 'pigeon' (hato) and 'heart' (hāto) sound alike in Japanese. Its Shiny form may draw on the rock dove.
Evolution notes
Pidove evolves into Tranquill at level 21.
In the games
In Black and White, where Pidove debuted, it turns up on Route 3 and in the inner Pinwheel Forest. In Black 2 and White 2 it also appears on Route 20 and at Floccesy Ranch.
In the anime
Ash's Pidove was a lone bird left behind after a flock attacked him in 'Enter Iris and Axew!', and he caught her after a battle. In 'There's a New Kid in Town!', a lost Pidove is nursed back to health.
