Lore

Biology

Tranquill is a grey bird with lighter grey and black markings, a yellow beak and eyes, and a dark pink marking above the beak. It has a black two-feather tuft, a petal-like ruff at the nape and a long black-tipped tail feather. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 15 kg.

Behaviour

The Pokédex describes Tranquill as bright, with an acute memory. Wherever in the world it travels, it keeps track of where its nest is, which is why it never loses its Trainer.

Habitat

The Pokédex places it in deep forests, which many people believe hide a land of peace where war never happens. In Galar it is found in Bridge Field, Giant's Mirror, Giant's Seat and the Stony Wilderness, and in Max Raid Battles. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Tranquill shares Pidove's Abilities. It learns Air Slash at level 38 and Sky Attack at level 56. With 77 base Attack and 65 base Speed it hits harder and moves faster than Pidove.

Name origin

Tranquill may combine 'tranquil' with 'quill', a feather. The Japanese name is Hatoboh (ハトーボー), possibly from hato (pigeon) and bō (boy or monk), or from Ihatov, the ideal world in Kenji Miyazawa's stories, which the peaceful-forest Pokédex lines might echo.

Design inspiration

Tranquill appears to be based on an oriental turtle dove. Its homing Pokédex entries suggest the homing pigeon, a bird bred to navigate home across huge distances. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Tranquill evolves from Pidove and becomes Unfezant at level 32.

In the games

Players meet Tranquill on Route 12 and in Lostlorn Forest in Black and White, its debut games, and in Black 2 and White 2 it can also be found on Route 3 and Victory Road.

In the anime

Trip's Tranquill debuted in 'A Rival Battle for Club Champ!', beating Ash's Tepig and Oshawott before losing to Pikachu. Ash's own Pidove evolved into Tranquill in 'A Venipede Stampede!' while helping to drive a Venipede swarm out of Castelia City.
