Pumpkaboo official artwork

Pumpkaboo is a Ghost/Grass-type Pokémon, the Pumpkin Pokémon, number 710 (#0710) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 5 kg.

Pumpkaboo is a jack-o'-lantern Pokémon that carries wandering spirits to the afterlife. It comes in four sizes, and the Pokédex now says they differ in more than height: each size collects a different size of soul.

Lore

Biology

A Medium Variety Pumpkaboo is 0.4 m tall and weighs 5 kg. Its lower body sits inside a pinkish pumpkin with two round holes that glow yellow-orange, while a shadowy black body with yellow eyes, small fangs and a curled tuft of fur pokes out of the top. The Pokédex says the light from the holes can hypnotise and control people and Pokémon.

Behaviour

Pumpkaboo grows restless at sunset. The Pokédex says a spirit trapped in this world inhabits the pumpkin, and that it carries other wandering spirits to where they belong. Pokémon Sleep's Sleep Style Dex says it occasionally flashes its hypnotic light even while asleep.

Habitat

Bulbapedia lists Pumpkaboo as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zone 15 of Jaune District, and the Mega Dimension DLC puts all four sizes in Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Pickup and Frisk are its Abilities, with Insomnia hidden. Trick-or-Treat adds the Ghost type to a target; Shadow Ball and Seed Bomb are its attacks. The four sizes (Small, Medium, Large and Jumbo, called Super Size before Legends: Z-A) share a 335 total, with each step up adding 5 HP and taking 5 Speed. Small ones prefer children's spirits, Large ones adults', and Jumbo ones (0.8 m, 15 kg) those of equally big people.

Name origin

Pumpkaboo may combine 'pumpkin' with 'boo' or 'peek-a-boo'. The Japanese name is Bakeccha (バケッチャ), possibly from obake ('ghost') and kabocha ('pumpkin').

Design inspiration

Pumpkaboo appears to be based on Halloween jack-o'-lanterns, and its fangs and black body may recall bats or black cats. A spirit that cannot move on may nod to Stingy Jack, a folk figure doomed to wander with a lantern.

Evolution notes

Pumpkaboo evolves into Gourgeist when traded, and keeps its size for life. A bred Pumpkaboo copies its mother's size, and larger sizes are rarer in the wild.

In the games

Nintendo Network handed out a Super Size Pumpkaboo in October 2014 as the 'Spooky 2014' distribution. The species first appeared in X and Y, on Route 16, and returned in Sword and Shield.

In the anime

Jessie fell over a Jumbo Variety Pumpkaboo and caught it in the episode where it debuted, 'The Bamboozling Forest!'.

Fun facts

  • Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist are the only Pokémon that can learn Trick-or-Treat.
  • Bulbapedia says wild Jumbo Variety Pumpkaboo always hold a Miracle Seed, while other sizes never hold anything.
  • Before XXL and XXS labels were added for every species, Jumbo Variety Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist were the only Pokémon with an XXL size in Pokémon GO.
