Quagsire is a Water/Ground-type Pokémon, the Water Fish Pokémon, number 195 (#0195) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 75 kg.

Quagsire is the Water Fish Pokémon, a huge, relaxed amphibian that keeps bumping its head on boat hulls and riverbed boulders and never seems to mind. It catches its dinner by doing nothing at all, which is also why it hardly ever gets hungry.

Lore

Biology

Quagsire is a light blue, two-legged amphibian with a broad head, a wide mouth, tiny black eyes and a wavy purple stripe down its back. A dark blue fin runs along its spine and out along its thick tail, and it is smaller on the female. It is 1.4 m (4'07") tall and weighs 75 kg (165.3 lbs), with a slimy outer skin and a bottom-heavy body that leaves no room for visible legs.

Behaviour

Quagsire is carefree and sluggish, and the Pokédex says it ignores bumps against boats and boulders while swimming. It is protective towards Wooper, and Bulbapedia says it hides under the water by day to stay out of the sun.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a water's-edge Pokémon, and Bulbapedia adds muddy swamps. In Scarlet and Violet you get one by evolving Wooper, wild ones live around Kitakami's rivers and lakes, and it is not in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

It hunts by lying in the water with its mouth wide open and waiting for prey to blunder in unaware.

Powers

Its Abilities are Damp, Water Absorb and the hidden Unaware. Its Water and Ground typing makes it immune to Electric moves but four times weak to Grass. It fights with Muddy Water, Aqua Tail and Earthquake. With base HP 95, Attack 85 and Defense 85 but Speed 35, it is a bulky, slow tank.

Name origin

Quagsire may blend 'quagmire' with 'sire' or Siren, a genus of salamander. Its Japanese name, Nuoh (ヌオー), may combine numa (swamp) with ō (king), or refer to the ōsanshōuo, the Japanese giant salamander.

Design inspiration

Quagsire seems to be modelled on a giant salamander.

Evolution notes

Quagsire evolves from Wooper at level 20.

In the games

Quagsire's biggest role is the landlord in Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, who sells your team its land. It debuted in Gold and Silver, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4 and 6 star Tera Raids in Kitakami.

In the anime

Quagsire debuted in 'Once in a Blue Moon', where wild ones collect round objects, including Ash's GS Ball, for a moonlit festival at Blue Moon Falls. Crasher Wake used one in his Gym battle against Ash in 'A Crasher Course in Power!'.

Fun facts

  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo, Quagsire's early design appears to be based on a beta Pokémon called Mizūo (ミズウオ).
  • Its French name was meant to be said Maraisté, but French games showed names in capitals without accents before Generation V, so the final e went silent; the commentator in Pokémon Stadium 2 is the only known recording of the intended sound.
  • In 'Love, Totodile Style', Ash's Totodile ends the episode head over heels for a Quagsire.
